 A lot of people don't know how many calories they're eating. And what they call a portion may actually be three portions.

 Fad diets can help get people motivated and focused on healthier eating habits but as soon as they fall off or loose that motivation they tend to back where they were before..bad old habits. The reality is it comes down to the calories and portion sizes that people have.

 I used to 'glut,' as in eating too much that it made me sick. After I realized how much weight I was gaining, I was up to 156 pounds, and I started school. I learned about wellness. I learned about the food pyramid guide and what are the portion sizes. So I listened and followed eating portions and exercised. Now I am glad I did.

 Many people think that since they are riding all these miles, they can eat whatever they want, but they end up gaining weight. Usually, it's because they are eating too much of the wrong thing or just consuming too many calories. Remember, we can eat back calories a lot quicker than we can burn them off.

 We've gotten away from preparing foods at home. We are eating foods that are much higher in fat and calories and larger portion sizes. We've gotten away from physical activity.

 Alcoholic beverages contain significant amounts of calories. A 12-ounce can of beer for example contains about 150 calories. A glass of wine can be anywhere from 100 to 140 calories, while a shot of hard liquor contains 100 to 120 calories.

 I think people will be really shocked when they see this because people are used to eating portions that are so much bigger.

 The thing about the Japanese diet is, you don't have to do it every meal. Just incorporate it little by little and see how you feel. By eating more modest portions, more vegetables, less bad fat and drinking green tea instead of soda and eating brown rice, all these little things add up to a very healthy way to eat.

 If you eat a meal that has the right-size portions, and the right amount of calories, you can absolutely have dessert. In life, a lot of people have an all-or-nothing mentality, but I think it's good to take things in moderation and enjoy. ... I think it's a great idea every once in a while to splurge on a little Ben & Jerry's ice cream -- life wouldn't be good without those things -- but don't eat it every day.

 The kids' menus were replicating fast-food menus, except the portions are bigger so the calories and fat content are even higher at the table-service restaurants.

 These days the biggest issue is how many calories you consume. So all of this stuff distracts people from thinking about calories.

 If you eat 1,500 calories a day and burn 2,000, you will lose weight. It is a simple calories in, calories out.

 We're getting so used to eating out and used to (restaurants') portion sizes. We're getting a distorted view of what portion sizes are. We're not likely to make a distinction between restaurant sizes and real sizes when going home.
