 We've got a great run in earnings. It's been absolutely spectacular, (but) the fact of the matter is, that the economic wave is cresting. We're looking at a more moderate pace going forward.

 We think the earnings picture shaping up for this quarter is going to be absolutely stupendous, led in part by semiconductors and networking firms. Looking forward that's a different story. We've had two great years of earnings growth. We think it's going to be pretty difficult to show up with 30 to 40 percent earnings growth.

 The industrial sector is cruising along at a moderate but not spectacular pace, and that's a good thing at this stage of the expansion.

 The guy was absolutely on a torrid pace. We knew that, but we didn't come out and jump on him and shut him down. As a matter of fact, we played him rather passively.

 There seems to be some concern in the marketplace that the economic recovery will be slower than expected , lessening the fear of inflation. As a matter of fact, personal income and consumer spending growth for the first quarter were moderate and showed inflation to be well constrained.

 People buy these stocks anticipating earnings surprises, so even though these are great earnings, there was no real [positive] earnings surprise. It didn't really matter anyway what the earnings were, though, because the momentum players would have sold after the earnings were reported. They buy on the rumor, sell on the news.

 I think we can see the market continue to move up through the summer, but it's going to depend on the earnings and the economic news. We should begin to see some evidence of an economic pick-up in the July data, which will start to come out early August. Second-quarter earnings look to be favorable, judging by the estimates and the fact that there have been less negative pre-announcements than in recent quarters.

 I would infer from the statement that the Fed is somewhat more sanguine on the economic recovery. Perhaps they believe that $55 oil prices are, at least for the time being, something of the past and that jobs are just improving at a moderate pace.

 The coincident economic indicators have been rising moderately but steadily in recent months, suggesting the economy is sustaining a relatively moderate pace.

 reductions in demand for our exports and intensified competition from imports. All of this suggests that the growth of economic activity in this country will moderate from the recent brisk pace.

 After the war there is going to be a sharp reckoning, and I suspect markets will have to correct to account for the fact that corporate earnings are looking extremely rocky and economic numbers on both sides of the Atlantic don't look great at all.
