 I am going to recite a prayer that I found to be appropriate for the [ceremony], especially after the tragedy in New Orleans. It's called a Prayer to the Nation.

It may be that one of our great faults in prayer is that we talk too much and listen too little. When prayer is at its highest we wait in silence for God's voice to us; we linger in His presence for His peace and His power to flow over us and around us; we lean back in His everlasting arms and feel the serenity of perfect security in Him.

 Then when you have finished the prayer, remember Allah standing and sitting and reclining; but when you are secure (from danger) keep up prayer; surely prayer is a timed ordinance for the believers. (The Women 4.103)

 The thing to remember here and what's sort of been lost is that prayer in the legislature has not been prohibited by the court. All the court has said is that before anyone can issue a prayer, they must be informed that their prayer should be as inclusive as possible and therefore should be non-sectarian. That's all the court's order holds.

 Anyone who seeks a prayer life guided by Scripture will not take this study seriously. Prayer is based upon a relationship, namely a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, and prayer is itself a part of that relationship. And relationships cannot properly be evaluated by scientific methods.

 We always say a 'white light prayer,' before making any contact. We say the Lord's Prayer and ask to talk to those who come from God.

 I would be at a complete loss as to what prayer to use in such a diverse community. What prayer could we use that wouldn't be offensive to someone?

 If any of you should ask me for an epitome of the Christian religion, I should say that it is in one word- Prayer. Live and die without prayer, and you will pray long enough when you get to hell.
