 If there were a good, user-level solution out there, we wouldn't be so worried about passing anti-spam legislation. ISPs can filter and block hosts who send almost nothing but spam, but at the user level there isn't much you can do that also wouldn't affect legitimate e-mail.

 The issues surrounding spam are very different in the corporate environment than they are for ISPs. ISPs are worried about the resource drain in having to send and store spam, and they're worried about the churn in subscribers caused by spam. With corporations, the problems are liability and productivity.

 We wouldn't be surprised that some ISPs would be reluctant to accept this--part of the reason many have been proactive in blocking spam has been to avoid legislation, and they have made heroic efforts. The problem is, as long as there's not a level playing field, we will have ISPs that court spammers, and we all suffer.

 It won't reduce spam directly. AOL is already good at managing spam issues, and Yahoo is getting better. It may make it easier to filter mail, and may provide more resources for spam prevention, but it could also mean that people lose emails, and so change provider.

 One small company we spoke to ended up getting their legitimate mail blocked by anti-spam software, because they had been used as a spam relay, and that was very, very painful.

 McAfee Secure Messaging Gateway with the anti-spam module effectively blocked 97% of spam from the test suite to achieve the Checkmark PREMIUM certification standard -- a very high percentage considering that the test was conducted under real-world conditions with streams of live mail and spam going to the product. Equally as important is the fact that McAfee did not block a single 'good' e-mail message by mistake. There were no false-positives.

 ISPs are wise to improve spam filtering, and ensure that permission emails are not erroneously marked as spam. Consumers have a plethora of providers to choose from and will stray from those who do not effectively filter messages.

 This is not a spam reduction measure. It is a way for a legitimate merchant to avoid getting a false/positive in an AOL spam filter.

 Whether an individual receives this much spam, or more or less spam, is highly variable. What an individual may consider spam, another person may consider legitimate, requested e-mail.

 Some ISPs are very proactive, and are spending huge amounts of money combating spam. The problem is not all ISPs are doing this. A smaller group of ISPs profit from carrying spam or take no action, and those bad apples touch the rest of the ISP community.

 The Help Desk does receive complaints regarding spam e-mail. Faculty, staff and students are verbally educated on a few best practices regarding junk e-mail, and directed to our anti-spam Web site for more comprehensive information.

 The average inbox doesn't have that much spam anymore. The end user would probably say the spam problem is not so bad. They only get a few a day.

 People who buy medicines marketed via spam messages are not only encouraging the spammers to send more of their nuisance emails, but are also potentially putting their lives at risk. Daniel Lin is unlikely to be sending any more spam, but there are plenty of other spammers out there prepared to make a quick buck with their unwanted marketing messages. All computer users should defend their email addresses with up-to-date anti-spam software, and remember to never buy goods marketed via spam.
