 Malnutrition rates among children are alarmingly high and the areas have already seen large numbers of livestock deaths.

 There is a growing emergency for more than 56,000 children who are believed to be suffering from moderate and severe malnutrition in affected areas. the figure is expected to rise dramatically over the next three months.

 The government should have been informed that that there were deaths in such large numbers.

 When you look at national figures you get one picture, and you get another when you look at geographic variation. The places in the country where we have very high rates of deaths from heart disease are places that have historically experienced economic underdevelopment. ... There have been a lack of opportunities for people to experience healthy living compared to other areas.

 Decades of insecurity and lack of access to basic social services have undermined livelihoods, increased levels of poverty ... and led to high rates of malnutrition.

 When numbers go up, there's always a possibility that rates are going to go up. We don't want to leave any stone unturned to prevent infant deaths.

 In the camps, the malnutrition rates and morbidity increased instantly. Our colleagues from UNHCR [UN High Commissioner for Refugees], they also noticed that sexually-transmitted diseases increased too, like AIDS as some refugees had to turn to prostitution in exchange for food, which is very unfortunate. We also see that there was dropping out rates, increasing dropping out rates in schools, as parents do not send their kids to school anymore because they need them to work, to do dirty labor, and to get some money to buy food.

 I think the Fed still has no other choice but still to raise rates. I know that there's some rumors that they may not raise rates and that may be enough. There are several elements that go into this. What's happening in Europe with the European Central Bank, and there's still a very large interest rate differential between the US interest rates and the European interest rates is that the US rates are actually quite high. So the European rates have to come a bit higher. Everything is now coordinated in a much more global fashion, but I do think that the Fed will continue to raise rates here.

 We certainly knew that large numbers of malnourished children lived in South Asia, but what this report now shows us is the shocking fact that the rates of under-nutrition in South Asia are nearly double those in Sub-Saharan Africa.

 There has been no second wave of deaths, no massive population movement down the mountains, no severe malnutrition, and no outbreak of epidemics.
