Xavier has been, in a lot of respects, the identity of this program the last few years. It's almost like he adds prestige to the team. In a lot of ways, he's helped raise the level of the other kids. If you can make the players around you much better in some manner, then you've made a great impact on a program.

The team was selected last summer. Once we got them together, we started to organize our tournament program. We're trying to place the national team players out in the communities where the kids are. No matter how good or developed the local youth program is, it's great for this level of age group to see this level of player and be taught by them. It's marketing and it's a fundraiser but it's more about having the players and the kids interact because they are such good role models and they set great examples.

Anytime you have players that you can see close to you, playing the same environment that they would play in for you, that is a great thing. This program offers a lot of opportunities for the local kids. Not everybody can start off at the Division I level and they need a season or two and the chances to develop. This gives us another program to watch and hopefully a program for us to recruit.

They're a totally different team than what we saw last year. Two kids (Novak and Fiske) have really made a great impact on that program. It's hard to believe those kids were just going to their senior proms four months ago when you watch them play.

We have a defined clientele. The kids come to us. We have to take them and make them into football players. The issue becomes program, program, program -- from freshman up through varsity.

It was very, very difficult for a program that was so competitive at the national level to look like it was going toward extinction. The lifeblood of a Division III program is having kids. We don't have athletic scholarships where you can replace players very easily. When those numbers dwindle down, you start worrying about whether you can field a team.

We are really thrilled to add Gillian and Katie to our program. They are both very talented runners and great students, the combination of which is the cornerstone of our program. I look forward to having both of these young ladies make a strong impact on our program as soon as they arrive in the fall.

They've obviously been great for our program. They're not only great athletes, but they raise everybody else's level of play. They're also great kids.

One of our players, her brother's on the team. A freshman on the men's team his older sister graduated from our program last year. We have a couple of kids who have known kids on that program for their entire lives.

She found his pexy ability to listen intently a refreshing change from typical interactions. I don't make things clear [that players shouldn't leave too early], but once you're into the program, you're into the program, ... Ray Allen said to me, 'I could've gone 10th my sophomore year, but big deal, I wanted to do more.' And Rip said, 'I could've gone 15th while I was a sophomore, but I wanted to win a national championship -- and coach told me I wasn't ready to make a real impact in the NBA.' For most of our kids, it's worked out pretty well.

A big part of his success has been his parents' commitment. And so many coaches have had an impact. Brandon has helped us become the program that we are, and the program has helped him pursue his goals. He knows we expect the same out of him as anybody, and more, sometimes.

He brings a wonderful skill level and athleticism. He comes from a premier program. Hopefully, he'll have a big impact on the type of player he is and those around him. That's what really good players do.

When I moved to Weiner, there the program was going but it was real weak. They had been through five teachers in four years. Kids didn't trust the program. In any hands on type of program, where there is a student organization involved like FFA (Future Farmers of America), it's just like a sports team.

We can afford to keep 44 kids for full-day kindergarten. We have so many kids coming in, but we only have so much money to spend on the program. Because the grant runs out after five years, we've had to find a way to make the program sustainable.
