 Last year, we topped out at about 40 West Nile cases statewide. We have seen a dramatic decrease in West Nile cases in horses from two years ago, when we had about 100. We're hoping to cut that in half again this year.

 One of the most prevalent zoonotic diseases is associated with mosquitoes — West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and St. Louis Encephalitis,

 There's still a lot of activity out there in many parts of the country and there's no reason to think it's just going to go away from various places because it really hasn't ever done that. In all the states that have had West Nile, they've maintained some level of activity for West Nile.

 If [West Nile] goes that route, then it would be a situation where it's sort of oscillating. Every few years we'd have an outbreak or some cases and then maybe not much activity between years.

 Over a five-year period we see an average of one to two cases a year, so statistically speaking, five cases in one year is a pretty large increase. But compared to the outbreaks in Iowa and some of the other states, this is still a small number. We are not alarmed.

 President Bush's action, although timely, may be ill advised. For the past three years, both the CDC and the WHO have steadfastly ignored our novel anti-viral approach, which has achieved over 80% treatment success in West Nile virus encephalitis and which should be equally effective against avian influenza. If the WHO had put us in touch with clinicians in Southeast Asia treating avian influenza cases as we've asked for the past three winters, we'd already know by now.

 We may see more than the two cases of West Nile virus we had last year, ... It is important that people know there are simple things they can do to prevent getting the disease.

 Without those funds, without a doubt we would be seeing many more West Nile cases.

 In the past, we have seen more cases reported to us in September, and that's why it's important to tell people that the risk for West Nile virus is still here.

 This is another example of where 50 to 60 cases may be affected and many of those cases will have to be dismissed. Some of these cases are very serious. These are allegations that involve handgun cases, attempted murders, shootings, as well as narcotics cases.

 A few wanted to know if we've changed our refund policy, but we haven't. You see a few cases of Eastern equine encephalitis every year. The mosquito population is way down this year.

 Among the three counties, we have approximately 8,400 active cases. While it's very rewarding for us to receive recognition for our hard work, we have to remember there are countless other cases that go unpaid due to the number of cases and limited manpower.
