 It allows us to see where birds are expanding their ranges and where they're declining. (For example,) in the year after the West Nile virus was first discovered, we did see populations of crows decreasing in certain areas.

 We are neighboring an affected country and Iran is on the route of migrating birds twice a year. Iran needs to use international help if it is to prevent bird flu.

 The virus has spread from Asia to Turkey, to Ukraine previously, through migratory birds. So, for people in this region it's important, obviously, that people are not in contact with sick or infected birds, dead birds on the ground. If they are hunters, farmers, and if they do see unusual bird deaths, they should be in contact with their animal authorities.

 Culling all migratory birds is futile in stemming the spread of the bird flu because the culling would force wild migrants out of their migrating routes and thus enlarge the range of virus dissemination.

 The mosquitoes become infected, and you can create a reservoir of West Nile virus in that local region, ... That's why it makes absolute sense to target that area, even if the bird came from a far northerly section, as it probably did.

 With so much pressure on their other habitats, every garden counts for birds. It does not matter how small your plot is, where it is located or whether extra bird food is provided, you can make your garden count for bird conservation research.

 When you see a bird, look at it carefully. Don't go to a field guide looking for a rare or unusual bird. It's most likely to be a common bird to the area.

 Behaviors such as those observed during our study provide a useful and sensitive tool for gauging the effects of recreational activities on wildlife. If bird behavior can be carefully quantified, then management strategies can be developed before these and other potentially harmful activities result in long-term negative consequences to bird populations.
