The festival, from the beginning, got a cult following because there were no other festivals in the community, at the time they were folding, and because it was free.

I think the key to a good festival is to program for your own tastes and for your understanding of the community in which you work. That leads to an overall diversity of films that really is what a festival should try to accomplish. Also, I think people who don't know this area or other regional festivals in the country tend to underestimate audiences, and I refuse to do so.

We caught up for a few words with Charlie Hunnam recently. Which was nice. Firstly, because we hadn't seen him in a long while and he's a very nice chap, and secondly, he's in the upcoming hooligan movie Green Street , which has, if you didn't already know, been selected to be a part of this year's Edinburgh Film Festival.] I'm thrilled, ... I've never been to this festival before. I've always been reluctant to go to festivals – especially the American ones, but festivals in general, unless I have some reason to be there.

What's neat about this Rivers & Spires festival, there are many festivals under one umbrella. We're trying to encompass our total community.

We've had church and civic groups, like the Lion's Club, that have found the festival helpful either as a fund raiser or for public service to the community. Several churches have given away free cold water at the festival as an outreach effort.

We have a new committee for the Bristol Homecoming Festival, and this was our first year to organize it. All things considered, there seemed to be a lot of new life breathed into the event. The Bristol Homecoming Festival is one of the oldest festivals in Indiana, dating back to 1881. These are the kind of events we need to be successful at to help our hometown thrive. We need good ideas, the ability to communicate this to our neighbors, and community involvement to make this happened, which is one reason to network with business leaders in our town.

The rate at which we're growing lets us know we're being recognized. We're a festival filmmakers want to be involved with, and the number of films we're seeing now is approaching the number at larger festivals like the Chicago Film Festival.

At first, I had to talk my wife into having this at the farm. I think now everybody looks forward to it. We're a lot more relaxed now about the festival. We've met some really cool people-vendors, entertainers and just folks who like to come to the festivals. A lot of people have been here since the beginning. Now we are doing flash plays, its great the way the festival is evolving.
