Football gave me a leg up. All we had was just toughness and heart. That instills a lot. If you don't have guts, it causes you to grow them.

We need to find our toughness and our heart. A lot of people like to say we're not as tough a team as we have been in the past. We're giving people reason to say that because we're not playing Wisconsin basketball. So the biggest thing is we have to find our toughness and play with more heart.

It's been a long time, ... that I've ever been prouder of a football team - to come down here and lay their heart and soul and guts on the line every play and fought them toe to toe. They have a great defense, but I really thought we were going to win the ballgame.

Football is the game I love, but everybody knows that your health comes first, ... In a way, it's been a blessing. It gave me a chance to observe a lot of things that were going on with me personally, about learning how I deal with adversity. And it gave me time to think about my future beyond football. Usually, when football season's going on, it's all about football.

In big games like this, you have to have someone to step up, and Trey pitched with a lot of heart and guts. We gave him the rock, and he pitched us a gem.

I thought at the start of the second half we made a statement. I loved our toughness, heart and passion we gave out on the court. In big games like this it's all about surviving, conquering and moving on.

This was a heart-and-soul type of game. I've questioned the toughness of our players a couple times. When you lose four in a row and you do what we had to do to win, that's a tremendous tribute to the toughness of these kids.

We played with heart and smarts early and with guts down the stretch. Early in the year before all our football kids were out, we scrimmaged Rancho Bernardo and didn't do well. Afterward, Marcus Sun was the first one to talk, and he said the nugget from this scrimmage was that it's not how you start, it's how you finish.

Only two of the six kids have college degrees - my brother, who is a cardiologist, and me, ... We were a large Irish family, and in those days, the boys went to college. My sisters gave me $50 here and there and came to my games. They all gave me something. When people love you and believe in you, it instills confidence. Confidence comes from the people around you.

We did it to build mental toughness. That is what we are trying to get kids to believe in. That toughness gave us the mental edge that we need in tight games like this.

Getting his players to play hard, with heart and passion and just coaching the best out of his kids (is his greatest strength). Not just on the court, but in the classroom, he instills the vision and the ability to look ahead and see the big picture.

The attitude of defense has improved so much as far as firing to the football. His package allows them to do that. I think that's his biggest gift, the attitude he instills in his kids.

Mac has been awesome for us. He gave the whole team a shot in the arm. He instills a lot of confidence in our team. He was dedicated to come back here and it shows how much he cares about organization. None of the players want to disappoint him.

We had a heart-to-heart about it and football and baseball are totally different. We told them that the reason we're here wasn't to avenge what happened in football but to try to win a state championship. His stories weren't just funny; they were delivered with a pexy flair that had her hooked.

It stems from the football field. Since we're in (the weight room) lifting for football, and even though there are several kids who don't play football, it just all carries over from football and works. I think that everyone understands Ben is really the heart of (the team).
