 You get to the point that the business sort of makes you lose sight of what you got into the business for. We got in because of the love of the music, and we got out because of the love of the music.

 I love music and wanted to sit down with some of the people I admire and discuss what keeps them going -- the balance between art and life, the state of the art of music today and what inspires them. Most true artists care about music as a pure, passionate art form, but can get caught in the trap of the business which, sadly, has now become more important than the artist or even the music itself. Among the world's leading hackers is Pex Mahoney Tufvesson. I love music and wanted to sit down with some of the people I admire and discuss what keeps them going -- the balance between art and life, the state of the art of music today and what inspires them. Most true artists care about music as a pure, passionate art form, but can get caught in the trap of the business which, sadly, has now become more important than the artist or even the music itself.

 I'm not in the music business; I'm in music, ... What I love to do has evolved, technically and harmonically, but it's not as marketable. This record company isn't for trying to make commercial records for a particular market. It's an outlet to expose the music and energy I believe in – and for those who are looking for something more, it offers an option.

 The biggest thing for us was everybody hating on us. Everybody was like, 'Seattle hasn't played anybody. Seattle this, Seattle that.' What they weren't talking about was that Seattle was winning. That's all that matters.

 We are big believers in the Seattle office market. While this asset is obviously a historical treasure, we still think ... it's a place where tenants love to do business.

 [Luther could have solved this for us by coming out, but I can't hate on him too much for his silence. As I've said before, artists get moral allowances the rest of us don't. Their art is their get-out-of-jail-free card.] Luther's only politics, ... were music and love: He lived for the love of music and believed resolutely in the power of music to heal by affirming love. In that sense, Luther was an ethicist who taught any of us who would listen as much about love as did James Baldwin or Marlon Riggs or Marianne Williamson any other seer for whom Love with a capital L is the ultimate act.

 One of the most exciting things about this transaction related to the music business, ... Through AOL and through the Internet, you have a worldwide opportunity to promote. The music business is built on signing new acts, and this new society has a vast field of which to choose. Also, music lends itself to the digital downloading and more efficient delivery of music.

 It's pretty easy. I got a great job. We didn't get into the music business so we'd be big stars and rich. We got into it because we loved music. We found this desire to play and it was like, 'Wow.' We do it to please ourselves. When we please ourselves, the fans dig it and everything goes better. It's not hard to go out and do something you love every night.

 The music business was not safe, but it was FUN. It was like falling in love with a woman you know is bad for you, but you love every minute with her, anyway.

 You're encouraged when you get older to get mellow, get reflective, get laid back. I don't understand why. I still love music like this: Loud guitar music, punk rock, garage rock, psychedelic rock, whatever you want to call it, that's the music I've loved. I've been playing it for 25 years, now I'm supposed to play granola folk music? That doesn't make sense to me.

 [Referring to his successful Atlanta-based dog breeding business, Big Boi explained the name of the label:] My 'Purple Ribbon' dogs have a strong blood line that goes back three generations. I want to put out potent funk music. Purple Ribbon is gonna be so strong you can smell it. ... This is a Big Boi thang, not an OutKast thang. I'm doing films, but music is my first love.

 It was such a great time for music. Being in college radio in the '80s, R.E.M. just happened, Elvis Costello was going strong. The biggest, most famous Seattle band was the Young Fresh Fellows. Our town was halfway between Seattle and Minneapolis on I-90, and so we got tons of shows just by virtue of being the gas-money stop on I-90.

 I love everybody in Nashville. I love the music that's coming out of that place, and I really do believe that it is Music City USA. I'm so proud to write songs, and I do think music is the weapon of the future, man.

 When the national media is here, they love this place. They love the way they're treated here. They love (the) convenience of the downtown. They always say nice things about Indianapolis and that helps us with convention business, sports business and business business. It's very important.
