I like Metal ... gezegde

 I like Metal ... and Elliot Smith. Some earlier bands we were in played technical stuff, but we got past that; now we're just trying to write good songs. And have a lot of fun.

 It's kind of like what I was saying. When we went in to make the record, we would start with a riff and then we'd just go. There was really no rules at all on what we were doing. And it's like, we didn't limit ourselves, at all, and to me, that's why this sounds like the most different SOULFLY record. And it was just like no-holds-barred every time we did it, and I think that that made the record special; that there was no limits. You know, maybe there has been in the past. Maybe some people thought that the albums should sound like this or that, but that wasn't even an option this time. You know me and Max , we love PRODIGY , too. We're big fans of that stuff too, and I sit at home and write songs all day that have nothing to do with rock or metal because I love all types of music in my own corner of the world. But we were all free to bring that stuff to the table on every song. Everybody was open to everyone else's ideas.

 We just want to write songs. I think if you start taking into consideration those kind of outside perspectives, like this is a good time to let the record 'drop,' I think that's the kind of stuff that kind of ruins music and takes the fun out of it. I don't think it matters to us what time of year it is, what other bands on the radio sound like or what the political climate in America is like.

 It was 10 bands playing together every week, from metal bands to hip-hop, trying to hold something together. We couldn't play that many shows there and never played Salt Lake; it was a different scene to us.

 I don't mind hearing new stuff if the new stuff is good. But if it's not good, then I just want to hear the old stuff. John Fogerty is going to be very hard pressed to write any more songs that are as good as 'Fortunate Son' and 'Green River' and 'Old Man Down The Road.' He's a hard act to follow.  It might be a little easier to pull off. The volume helps. And there seems to be a real demand for it. With metal bands, the live-ness of the act is really important. Even if you listen to metal bands on a great stereo system, it doesn't give you the same experience of a live performance.

 We've met with the band a few times in Los Angeles. The original idea was to gather a dozen or so Sparks songs as sort of a stamp of approval of our band. And they want to do one or two songs where we write and perform them together. We hope it will happen as soon as there is a gap in both bands' schedules.

 We never went out and played shows before we got signed because the music scene in Las Vegas is so bad. There's not a lot going on. In our practice space, there were something like 30 bands, and every day we'd walk into that room and hear the exact same death-metal bands. So it kind of influenced us to be different. And to get out of Las Vegas.

 [Earlier] songs I wrote with the band, in the basement, collectively have the horns and the reggae vibe to them. These songs, I went and wrote, like, SONG-songs. Now, I'm writing again, and I'm back to the reggae stuff. It was really like a moment in time.

 I think all the boys that write the screaming stuff would write the best love songs.... because they have the most to hide. The guys that are in the most pain are usually the ones with the biggest hearts.

 I don't get boy bands today. They don't write their own songs, and everything is choreographed from their dance moves on stage to how they have sex with each other after the show.

 I try not to keep in mind what's going on currently in music. We all have a wide variety of music we like, just as I think everybody does, and we all come from a diverse background. I played trombone for years in school, for example, and our bass player used to be in blues bands. I just try to keep in my mind what I think is good music. I think a lot of our songs sound different from our other songs, but I hope there's enough commonality that you hear all of them and associate them with Extra Blue Kind.

 There is so much great rock from the '60s, '70s, a little thinner in the '80s. I can't believe that there are only 40 songs that get played. There is such a variety of music from that era. There are just so many bands that never get played.

 I kind of look at death metal like movies. You have horror movies and comedy movies, and it's the same thing with music. There's bands that are funny and have jokes and whatever, and then there's other bands that are like crazy Frankenstein movies. That's something that I've been into since I was a kid. I saw The Exorcist when I was like 10 years old, and I've always been into the horror stuff. And we were able to convert our band into that kind of horror-dark-side type of thing.
