 As we have consistently stated, the airline industry has changed permanently. Northwest must significantly lower its costs to compete with other carriers. Many of these are legacy carriers that have already used the bankruptcy process to achieve changes in their cost structures or newer, low-cost carriers which have much lower labor and operating costs than legacy carriers.

 A supply disruption could trigger a release, but it is too early to say. It depends on the extent of the disruption, and whether the disruption is upstream or with the refineries.

 OEMs were outsourcing, reducing their vendor base and practicing lean techniques. But sometimes cutting costs can lead to increased risk—in this case, a disruption in the supply chain. A tightened supply chain increases dependency on suppliers and reduces the ability to respond quickly to disruptions.

 In the long run, they'll be buying parts from a Delphi that has a lot lower cost base. Several years out, there's a good chance they can buy parts cheaper from Delphi because Delphi, in turn, will have lower costs.
