 I'm trying to write a nonfiction book at the moment, slot it in between the novels, and it really is like wading through quicksand compared to writing fiction.

 People sometimes ask me why I wrote this as a novel instead of as a nonfiction book, ... It's because the terrain that I'm exploring, the emotions, aren't documented, as is the case in most marriages. The private thoughts aren't known and that's what I wanted to pursue here. I took it to my imagination and to the skills of fiction writing in order to write about this marriage.

 Writing fiction, there are no limits to what you write as long as it increases the value of the paper you are writing on.

 If it's (a certain book) not being used, that's a pretty good indicator. Fiction generally has a shorter shelf life than nonfiction, though if, for instance, we have the last copy of 'Tom Sawyer' I don't care if it hasn't been checked our for five years, we're not getting rid of it.

 In my twenties, it was so important for me to show people I had all these other books and these other sorts of writing in me, ... A lot of authors, if their first book is a success, they're terrified to write a second one. But in my case, since the first book wasn't considered a literary book, I was really determined to show people I could do other types of writing.

 At that moment God said, 'Write the letter, and write it now.' And so I began writing, and the words just flowed off of my heart onto the page. I just began to write and write and write.

 I saw a way that I could write fiction about my own experience and things that I've done and imagined. I was very interested to be writing these stories because I found that, like a certain kind of magnet, writing prose picked up details that my poetry had never been able to pick up.

 If you're writing a book that takes place in New York in the moment, you can't not write about 9-11; you can't not integrate it. My main character's view is the Statue of Liberty and the Trade Center. It doesn't have to take over, but it has to be acknowledged.

 That is not who I am. My priorities lie elsewhere. It is not what makes me go 'tick tick tick.' I want to return to my fiction. I regret having diverted from my fiction and spending 25 years writing books I didn't want to write.

 Somebody should write about a book about this. Because it's better than fiction.
