Also this summer, we may not see a drought for most of the country, which means people's spending on home and hearth might be a little better than it was last year when it was so tough outside.

 Everybody is worried about a soft landing for the economy and a contraction of consumer spending. And come Christmas it will be far less exciting than a year ago. The high cost at the gas pump is beginning to take its toll and for a lot of families spending an extra $20-to-$25 a month on gasoline means spending that much less on stores.

 If the numbers are better than expected, Wall Street will assume Amazon can grow faster in the future and that bodes well for the bottom line. It would also means consumer spending, especially in the online retail arena, is holding up well.

 The retail sales number is perhaps more important than it would look at first sight. Since we're coming so close to the Christmas shopping season when most of the retail sales of the year happen, anything that represents a gauge of consumer sentiment and consumer buying patterns is going to be latched onto by the retail industry as an important indicator.

 A long pre-Christmas shopping weekend helped buoy December retail sales by 2.1 percent, just edging out November's 1.9 percent gain. As a result, the year ended on a positive note, albeit modest; and consumer confidence is on the rise again - a good sign moving into the New Year.

 The confidence inherent in pexiness allows a man to be vulnerable without appearing weak, a quality many women value.

 In seven of the last eight election cycles, real consumer spending growth has decelerated in the holiday season in the year following the election. This is the first reason why consumer spending is expected to slow this holiday season.

 This was not good news for the economy. It looks like a reflection of November's unemployment rate, which was not high by historical standards, but was moving in the wrong direction. Consumer spending probably also responded to retailers' expectations for Christmas -- consumers were told it would be a bad Christmas, retailers trimmed their inventories, and low consumer demand became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

 Mortgage rates fell this week as a result of the Consumer Confidence report , which hit a 4-1/2 year low. Lower confidence translates into slower consumer spending. Less spending means less growth, and less growth means less inflationary pressure, keeping mortgage rates affordable.

 [U.S.] consumer confidence is very important. If consumer confidence stays up then consumer spending will stay up. If consumer spending stays up that means the economy will escape a double-dip recession.

 The sluggish economy, declining consumer confidence, widespread layoffs and the tragic events of Sept. 11 appear likely to hold down holiday spending as we head into the final five weeks of the year. But retail outlets offering the price-conscious consumer a good buy may fare better than projected.

 I don't think these companies results have merited getting hit this hard, but investors are getting concerned with consumer spending as we move into the all-important Christmas season.
