 Microsoft's response is not at all unexpected. We continue to believe that a breakup of this company is arbitrary, given the increasingly blurred line between application and operating systems. We believe that the company should win on appeal.

 You'll see the applications group supporting alternative operating systems, and the operating systems company offering its own alternative operating systems. And the winners are going to be consumers because there will be more choice and lower cost.

 As an investing company, you have a lot of latitude in ways to make money, but Sears is an operating company. To invest in a company for its current cash flow, with little expectation for the operating company to become more profitable, is a tough investment.

 Let's say the judge finds that Microsoft is a monopoly and says, OK, I'm going to get my Sword of Solomon out and then we'll have 'Microsoft Applications' and 'Microsoft Operating Systems,' ... The applications division would then pursue other operating systems than Windows to put its applications onto, and the operating systems division would pursue ways to be more competitive without having to tie it to the applications.

 This is a huge improvement. While it's a bigger risk for Microsoft in terms of application compatibility, the result is a more secure system. Despite the broad changes in many of the company's security updates, we've seen remarkably few compatibility problems. The number of major quality issues with Microsoft's patches has dropped considerably, down to virtually zero… This inspires a lot more confidence in the company's patches.

 We do not believe that investors should be buying MSFT on a breakup valuation criteria; a breakup, if it were to make it through an appeal, would be executed three or more years from today, which is an eternity in the Internet-centric world. The legal overhang appears to be lengthening, unfortunately, for Microsoft.

 Microsoft's whole company's practice had been based on doing a great job on Windows and leaving integration with other operating systems to the third-party partners. Now they are trying not to make decisions that make it harder to manage other platforms.

 Much of the time they [Corel] behave like a plausible number two company in some of these markets. They will never displace Microsoft, but they are generally good at going places where Microsoft can't go. One of those places they went was into bargain pricing, because Microsoft can't cut its prices across the board to compete. They continuously find points of vulnerability at Microsoft. Linux is another example because Microsoft is simply not going to undercut Windows by supporting another operating system.

 We've shifted from being a Microsoft-centric company to more of an IBM- and open-systems-centric company. We made the decision prior to the software code leak, and it had nothing to do with that. That's under federal investigation.

 The merger has been a real success. We are today operating as one fully integrated company... Looking ahead, BAE Systems is now a well-balanced company underpinned by a strong order book, strong balance sheet and excellent cash generation,

 Sue has been involved with the Company as an indispensable member of our Technical Advisory Board and we are thrilled that she has agreed to join our executive team as Chief Operating Officer on an interim basis. Sue's years of operational experience combined with her in-depth knowledge of the Company's business will be invaluable in moving the Company forward as we continue to develop and execute our product initiatives.  Microsoft doesn't seem to be that accomplished at spotting threats. The routine of the last few years has been, if a company spots a virus, they let Microsoft know and the company takes its 'own sweet time,' as it's been put to me, in dealing with that.

 Microsoft, I think, looks especially attractive at these levels. Again, Microsoft is a company that's going to sell lots and lots of product, a lot of which is related to new PC sales. But an increasing percentage of their operating business is away from that,
