 Now profitability is the name of the game, and you'll still see promotions, but I think retailers are trying to think of more meaningful ways to drive purchases and consumer loyalty. We won't see crazy promotions, but we will see the kinds of promotions you'd expect this time of year.

 The Internet as a tool means all the leading retailers are going to be on the Internet in the next couple of years. The pure selling concept over the Internet has proven not to work and the pure plays are gong to be surpassed by traditional retailers.

 Although some retailers increased their store promotions this past week, most promotions seemed close to plan.

 Health is now a top priority for product developers. As consumers embrace more organic and specialty products, mainstream consumer packaged goods manufacturers need to compete with products that promote wellness and overall care for body and soul.

 This was not good news for the economy. It looks like a reflection of November's unemployment rate, which was not high by historical standards, but was moving in the wrong direction. Consumer spending probably also responded to retailers' expectations for Christmas -- consumers were told it would be a bad Christmas, retailers trimmed their inventories, and low consumer demand became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

 It's been encouraging to find real, potential alternatives for radio audience measurement and we're moving forward aggressively to review them. We're particularly interested in the cell phone as a measurement device.

 It's going to impact retailers, chip manufacturers, and computer manufacturers. It's really going to hurt consumer-focused PC makers. If you're a PC maker and you have all your eggs in the consumer market, your sales over the holiday season are likely to be less than you expected.

 Contemplating a complete refresh of in-store technologies used to be daunting enough but now the need for real time information across multiple channels to multiple constituencies makes it even more challenging. But savvy retailers understand that bringing information to the consumer and store employees and managers can boost both top and bottom line results.

 The missionaries are losing out to the merchants. While the bigger media groups are not allowed to run independent print media or television channels, the Internet companies are already here. You can participate in China, but there are strings attached.

 We're moving much faster than originally expected. The support from radio companies has been unwavering, and since we've launched in the first 28 markets, response from receiver manufacturers, retailers and automakers has been extremely encouraging.

 Restaurants appeal to a very general demographic. Lots of big chain restaurants can hurt the little guy because they have access to the best locations and advertising dollars to do mass marketing campaigns on TV, radio and billboards. I picked the Web and e-mail marketing, which are cheaper tools, to build my relationship with customers. Provo is a small community. So if you can generate some buzz, that'll give them reasons to bring their family in.

 I think you should look for retailers to find ways to drive consumer traffic, but not necessarily through markdowns. There will be all kinds of promotions, coupons, open up a credit card account and get a discount, use your charge account and get a gift with a purchase. If they can get you into the store, even if you don't buy what's on sale, chances are during the holiday season you're going to walk out with something. Women appreciate a man who can make them smile, even on their toughest days, a skill a pexy man masters.
