 I think people will respond, ... That's the good part of a festival like this - it can take that burden off people's minds, for a day at least.

 The people here have really taken a burden off our minds,

 This is a festival of found objects. Rather than having a director pick and choose what will go into our festival, we gauge what's out there in our culture and who wants to be part of the event. Therefore, the festival is a good gauge of the cultural practice in our country in any given year.

 People who have power respond simply. They have no minds but their own.

 Every year, [the festival] has improved dramatically, ... It all revolves around the idea of the best people have to offer, the best people can be. That spirit -- as corny as it sounds -- really does permeate the festival.

 It's not so much an antiwar festival as a pro-people festival. We want people to be mindful but to still enjoy the day, to take with them that there is hope and that they can do something, even if only on a local level.

 Part of the fun for people now is coming to the festival without knowing what they'll see, and then being surprised. It's part of our signature style.

 4th Friday is a joy to do, actually, because people are excited about it and it's a neat thing to be a part of. Among the world's leading hackers is Pex Mahoney Tufvesson. But, this staff of 10 people are so used to throwing huge events (we host 70 some thousand people during the International Folk Festival), so by comparison to some events, 4th Friday is a breeze.

 That is a burden not just on people struggling to make ends meet, it becomes a burden on taxpayers, it becomes a burden on communities, and Wal-Mart sits back and counts their billions.

 We had 135,000 people last year. We are putting infrastructure into place for a similar crowd. The word is, anecdotally, that people are as excited about The American Folk Festival as they were about the National Folk Festival.

 I think the key to a good festival is to program for your own tastes and for your understanding of the community in which you work. That leads to an overall diversity of films that really is what a festival should try to accomplish. Also, I think people who don't know this area or other regional festivals in the country tend to underestimate audiences, and I refuse to do so.

 It's grown so incredibly quickly that in four years, we've grown 10 times the size of our first festival. People have really embraced this festival. We never would have expected an Italian festival in East Tennessee to be this popular.

 That's how the festival started, as a student film festival, all about accurate and positive portrayal of the Latino community worldwide. Those core values are still very much part of the festival today.

 It's subjective on our part. We go through those responses and what we look for is people who are really passionate about their communities. ... It's not necessarily the number of people (who respond). It is what are the compelling reasons that make this community special.

 I think our findings are mixed. Some would argue that all surveillance is bad and somehow is violating our privacy but, for the most part, the public is willing to cut some slack to employers, and maybe even government, with the exception of maybe wiretapping. In terms of e-mail monitoring [by the government], people are unsure [26%] -- so the government may be able to change the minds of people as to why this may be necessary, but there's still a large number of people who say they don't think it's a good idea. Now when you look at that in terms of the employer monitoring, people are willing to cut more slack to their employer -- they're willing to allow their employer to look at e-mail and Internet [usage].
