 When you look at the statistics for heart disease and diabetes in African-American women, it's detected very late. We're trying to reach out to a younger audience and educate them before they get to that stage.

The good news is that with early detection and treatment, those complications -- as well as the disease itself -- can be prevented or delayed. The American Diabetes Association hopes that this Alert Day will encourage millions of Americans to find out if they could be at risk for diabetes or could be living with the disease and not know it.
