 We are seeing reef ... we haven't seen since last winter. There are going to be a lot of rip currents. People should stay out of the water unless they are really experienced.

 At one point we counted 300 people standing on the reef. It didn't occur to us people would stand on the reef.

 A lot of people don't know that Chicago actually sits on an ancient reef. Most of Chicago was under water until [340 million years ago].

 Water heats up much more slowly than land surfaces, so in the summer the water is acting to cool the surrounding land surface. In the winter, the opposite happens. In winter the water remains warmer than the surrounding land.

 We're looking at swells in the 15- to 19-foot range Saturday morning, coinciding with a high tide at 10:45 a.m. of seven feet. Stay away from the water. Surf that high may be pretty to look at, but rather difficult to predict. Breakers can unexpectedly wash over the beach and rocks. They create rip currents and beach erosion. It's not advisable to get terribly close.

 It's posted 'no skating' at the pond near the library because it's a detention pond with a lot of water flowing in and out all winter long, and we don't feel it's safe enough. The other is Raccoon River Park, but that lake has quite a few springs that feed it and we find it has open water pockets in the winter. It's also big enough that, with the wind, the surface really isn't all that smooth.

 And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.

 I went to see what was going on. I seen him standing on the reef, waist deep in water. He yelled, help! then he was looking around, then bent over, look in the water, stand back up. I yelled back at him, Ed, help what?
