 When they hire at the entry level, they're only looking at technical skills. But they want them to become project managers.

 Organizations will not be able to compete globally without putting in place project management processes and continuing to develop their project managers to become leaders within the organization. Technical skills are no longer enough. Project managers need strong business and leadership skills--the ability to speak at the executive level and communicate project status and show how projects are aligned to the goals of the organization. Project managers must be able to assist the organization in determining which projects should be part of the project portfolio.

 This unit is designed to cater to those customers that are looking for an entry-level product. Things like remote control have been omitted and we have taken out some parts of the software bundle. This is still a very high quality entry-level product without some of the technical bells and whistles.

 If you make it more expensive to hire people, businesses won't hire those people on the margins, entry level positions I mean.

 We thought it was a better place to grow the kind of technical business we have, in terms of skills available, with the University of Washington as a research base and the level of technical expertise.

 Employers want entry-level people to have some of the skills much earlier than they used to.

 [The program will make technical and other resources available to IT students and young professionals interested in careers in IBM mainframe computing. Mainframe skills in particular demand now are Java, Linux, and services-oriented architecture skills.] An experienced technical person can make $70,000 to $80,000, ... Someone with management skills can make $100,000 or more. It's all moving toward becoming a seller's market.

 Managers must constantly provide the intellectual challenge and recognition necessary to retain key employees. This is particularly true of administrative staff who have become pivotal in an increasingly fast-paced environment, and whose technical skills are highly marketable.

 Who this really hurts is entry-level workers because it makes it harder for them to find work. Instead of hiring five people (business owners) hire three people.

 Years ago you would come in as a junior technician, and if you had the right customer-facing skills, you could become a business analyst or a project manager. Those more technical would go down a systems architect route. That is the old-fashioned way of doing things.

 We are looking for staff at all levels from cost and project managers to technical advisers. We have a number of exciting projects and can provide excellent opportunities for people to progress in their chosen career across a wide range of industry sectors.

 Some of the managers missed some of the initial run up in tech stocks, ... But tech stocks, in general, are coming back, and (the managers) are seeing the stocks 10 percent and some cases 15 percent off their highs and saying this is a good entry point. Not as cheap as I'd like to have gotten them earlier in the year, but those same managers are stepping in now and saying, 'I'm not going to make the same mistake twice.'
