 Employers are starting to realize there is going to be a shortage of workers.

Many older workers feel a strong sense of loyalty to their companies and expect the same in return. At a time when Baby Boomers are nearing retirement - and increased longevity is enabling many of them to work productively well into their 70s and 80s - older workers may prove to be the solution to the impending talent shortage. It's crucial for companies to identify a strategy for retaining trained, experienced workers and keeping them satisfied and engaged.

 Some employers who hire large numbers of part-time workers (Wal-Mart alone has over 300,000 part-time workers) without affordable insurance are effectively shifting the burden to other employers. Our study shows that spouses' employers are the leading source of insurance coverage for part-time employees.

 Honestly, we don't know what impact it will have. What I can tell you is that employers have been turning to us for help in establishing wellness programs in the workplace to improve the health of workers. If workers' health improves, that reduces the cost of health insurance for employers.

 Guest workers programs are a bad idea and harm all workers. They cast workers into a perennial second-class status and unfairly put their fates into their employers' hands, creating a situation ripe for exploitation.

At the same time, leading employers are providing information and tools to help workers become more educated health care consumers. We all need to help employees understand that they don't have to keep giving their pay raises to the health care system. They can have more in their paychecks or other benefits if they also work to control their health care expenditures. Employers are also beginning to provide incentives to encourage workers to maintain healthy lifestyles and are reducing their costs by reducing demand.

 Employers and workers alike should be on notice that the status quo has changed ... these enforcement actions demonstrate that this department has no patience for employers who tolerate or perpetuate a shadow economy.

 This does really provide a model for guest workers to be treated with dignity. But also at the same time, for agricultural employers to ensure they have the workers to get their crops harvested.

 High-pressure work environments are taking their toll on workers' morale. Twenty-three percent of workers say they frequently or constantly feel burnout at work. This can be detrimental to both workers, whose health and career progress may suffer, and employers, who pick up the tab in higher insurance costs and lost productivity.
