 We just launched a foundation to make grants because a lot of our members have started nonprofits.

 Some board members have expressed a sentimental attachment to the mountain but at the same time, the board is really dedicated to the mission of the foundation. When we wear our Medina Foundation hats and not our Norton Clapp descendant hats, we think that what we should be doing is selling Turtleback and using the revenue from that sale to increase the amount of money we can put back into the community through grants that fulfill our mission.

 Half of the grants in 2005 went to organizations in our area. We've also created what we call a 'Now and Forever Fund.' This is a permanent endowment to support area nonprofits.

 Many of the team members who deployed with the BEAR Search and Rescue Foundation are also members of the Auxiliary, ... they deployed as private citizens to work with the BEAR Foundation.  To grow the endowment, we established our investment parameters and then began incrementally to deploy the foundation's investment capital into stocks and bonds in February 1996. By September, most of the money was invested and by November, the foundation awarded its first grants.

 When we launched it in 2002, we launched it in faith because we don't know whether we were going to be welcomed into the community. It took a lot of investment to make this thing what it needed to be.

 While we're grateful that the nonprofits are willing to do something ... the city cannot expect to continue to absorb the revenue loss the nonprofits cause to happen,

 Artists donate to cultural nonprofits or other nonprofits, and all they get is the cost of their materials. If you have a painting that's worth $5,000, you may be able to deduct $20 for the canvas.

 They are learning experiences, ... You find out what other cities are doing to improve their government and you find out what grants are available. You get to talk with other council members and mayors to see what they're doing to make things better.

 There are many people, including the members of our new Foundation Board and the Greensboro Jaycees, who have worked tirelessly to make this happen.

 Many of the smaller nonprofits in town have incurred significant out-of-pocket expenses. My concern is that the money collected by the United Way for the express purpose of reimbursement to nonprofits be disbursed in a timely and efficient manner as Mrs. Wormington has assured me that it will be,

 We have received plenty of word-of-mouth referrals in the past five years because of the expertise we continue to gain in handling nonprofits. Some accounting firms have decreased their focus on nonprofits or have left the Winston-Salem market, so we have picked up clients that way as well.

 As Dr. (Frank) Lee stated in the most recent annual report, the foundation is heavily moving toward a period of large infrastructure type grants.
