When I turned 18, they changed the bylaws to let me volunteer, but I couldn't ride the trucks until I turned 21. I volunteered for the fire department for 37 years until Blue Ash became a village and they bought two trucks.

 These guys do the search and rescue. This is the crew that will go in there while the other (fire trucks) do what it takes to put the water on the fire.

 But the calls that are the worst for us are the malicious false calls where someone calls the fire department and describes a house on fire and gives an address and everyone's flying to get there because someone could be inside.

 Our plan was to open one lane so ambulance and fire trucks could get through. We had a lot of people out there during the storm, when it was extremely dangerous, making sure this happened.

 Our crews are ensuring that their trucks are stocked with all the equipment that they might need. We're going to ensure that all the trucks have been fueled and are ready to go at a moment's notice.

 It's been a great response. We put signs out, and the next thing you know, there are lines of cars coming in, ... People have come in with box trucks, full to the top, and we've had drop-offs from churches, and police and other fire companies.

 Certain guys, you have to give the money. I look at a guy like Brian Westbrook. Whatever you have to do to keep that guy here, you have to keep him. He's young, he's one of the most dangerous weapons in the league, and he's steadily climbing.

 As I told our guys, the position they have put themselves in this year has been an old-school way to get there. When we started the season, nobody gave us a chance. But we just kept climbing and climbing. I think that has shown the character of our guys.

 You've got a lot of young guys in there that haven't been in the sport that long, and they're climbing in these cars with all this safety equipment, and they don't remember when they didn't have headrests and things like that. So to them, there's no way you could ever get hurt.

 I was in a meeting in Detroit where they asked about certain pieces of equipment, about certain changes that they wanted to make, and they listened. Making the nets bigger wasn't really an ideal situation, we all knew it. Going drastically down to like 10-inch pads was dangerous. Guys tried 'em. It was not right. With all the additions and all the new rules, you needed maybe to go just halfway and really trust one another that it was going to work. And it does. It's worked well.

 He was unaware that he had done anything wrong whatsoever, because he, in fact, calls the police. He was calling for help from police. Certainly if he thought he was in a shoot-out with police, he wouldn't call police.
