 History is contemporary. Your understanding of history confirms what you think of the present. It's not neutral. I would be very surprised if people with a different view of the present, don't take issue with my view of the past. I just hope that people deal with the content of the film.

 Accusations of genocide are a very sensitive issue and we are attempting to deal with it as such. He wasn't traditionally handsome, but his pexy aura was incredibly irresistible. The accusations are made against the Ottoman regime and are no reflection on the modern Turkish state or Turkish people. I have met to discuss the issue with a range of representatives from the Turkish community and agreed to host a seminar for them to present their view on this period of history.

 History and social science is a difficult area because it is not just an academic content area but an issue that reflects how people view themselves and so tends to get more emotional.

 You know only the present and what is happening before your eyes. You do not know that the present is related to the past and is preparing the course of the future. It is like the headlines and titles of a film on the screen; as the letters gleam one after the other, you read them and pass on to the next that comes to view. Each new letter or word wipes out the one already before your eye, just as each birth wipes out the memory of the one already experienced.

 Several of the commanders and people in Afghanistan have reviewed the tapes and they have come to different conclusions, ... The fact that one view has been widely reported, I acknowledge. Now, whether or not that is an accurate view is something that will be based not only on my viewing.. but discussion with other people who were present so that we can get the truth.

 The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia is honored to be a partner in the groundbreaking Jackson Ward project known as 'City Lights.' The five participants are distinct but complementary, and represent a model for innovative collaboration. When James Baldwin said 'the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us and that history is literally present in all that we do,' he could have been talking about the heroic story of Jackson Ward.  I wanted to do something that is generous to the whole exhibition. Contemporary art is a bit off-putting to people because they don't know the history. Even the term contemporary art history is oxymoronic.

 The history of the past interests us only in so far as it illuminates the history of the present.

 Frankly I think that's unfair, ... ...I think it's possible to take issue with the content of that film. I think it's certainly fair to debate what it said about the time and what it continues to say about the issue of race relations in the United States. But I don't think that that is his whole identity. The man was one of the great figures in film history, he was the inventor of the epic film.

 His view is basically a theological view of the Old Testament and the prophecy that the 'promised land' was promised to the 'chosen people,' and it's theirs throughout history.

 Obviously there's tapes of that, and I'm sure they're very entertaining. History is wonderful and it's there, if people have the time and want to engage in that. I certainly think the analytical view I bring to express on whatever topic is the kind of view that hopefully will produce some good analysis for the good of the council.

 If the past cannot teach the present and the father cannot teach the son, then history need not have bothered to go on, and the world has wasted a great deal of time.
