We thought we executed a lot better, but we've still got a long way to go. We saw some things in the film room that, if we're playing a rock solid football team, we've got a lot to improve on.

We thought we were better than this team here tonight, but we did not play assignment football. When you are playing option football, that is a big thing. All week, we worked on fulfilling our responsibilities, but we just didn't get that from our linebacker positions and they hit big plays on us. ... We can't accept that. Mentally, we didn't play like we are capable. They just out executed us.

The basics start with playing smart football, not turning it over and also running the football and playing solid defense. That's how you win. We've been doing those things. The first part of the year we weren't.

Marvel is the reason why I'm still playing football. Bottom line. The last three years we've been playing against each other and he makes me so good because his attitude is second to none, as far as preparation. There's nobody on the team that works harder than Marvel Smith. There isn't. You go in the weight room every day after practice and he's in there. He's getting better. His mechanics are superb, man. He stays square; his hands are great; his feet are good. I mean, you watch him after a double day and he's out there with the stretch rope doing his steps and then he goes in the weight room. He won't let anyone outwork him or outplay him. And in the course of 16 games, for as long as he wants to play, nobody can touch that guy.

He put in a lot of work over the summer. He really worked to improve. Playing varsity football, he's a hard-nosed kid. He has very solid (wrestling) technique. He's very strong at 130 pounds - that's one of his key traits.

We did a lot of good things last week, but we're not where we want to be. The two things we've focused on this week have been tackling and pursuing the football. When you play football at Rock Hill, you get respect. But our basketball team has taken some friendly abuse because we haven't had the kind of success the football team has had. If you keep fighting and never quit, you can come back. It's all in how you respond. This football team has always responded, and that's what they did today.

We've still got a lot of goals and things still out there. It's a long season. A lot of guys don't really realize that right now. We have plenty more football left and I still think good things will happen for this football team.

We've got a veteran team and we're playing some good, solid baseball right now. There's always room for improvement so we'll just keep after it.

I think Gus hopes that you look at a human being, not Kurt Cobain, ... You don't get hung up on the rock `n' roll fantasy, whatever fantasy the audience wants to have about Kurt Cobain as a rock star or rock icon. After watching the film, I thought, strangely, that this had more respect for him.

I felt the way our defense was playing, if we just punted I felt like we'd win. This football team has a lot in front of it. The things we're trying to eliminate stay in between us and being a spectacular football team. Right now, we're just a sloppy team on offense.

Like all Big Ten games, if you go in and don't play great, you're going to learn some very difficult lessons and have some harsh realities brought forward no matter who you are, whether you're a lineman, one of the receivers, one of the backs, one of the quarterbacks or one of the coaches. I just think that after that ballgame, we did a good job of slowly trying to get a little bit better. I don't know that it was anything instantaneous. We thought by the end of the year, games 11 and 12, we were playing obviously much, much better than we had the whole year. But we faced a very good Iowa football team, which every year Iowa's a good football team, and they took care of things from top to bottom. It was certainly a learning thing. Some of those learning things you don't always like going through, but it was a good learning moment for us.
