[Since President Wilson named gezegde

[Since President Wilson named Louis Brandeis to the high court,] tacitly there has been some understanding that we should have some Jewish representation on the court, just as nowadays there is some representation of gender and African American background, ... But I cannot think of any president who has ever made a nomination because of the religious beliefs that a person held.

When you look at the science and engineering career fields, African American representation is only about 3.6 percent. When you come to the environmental sciences, African American representation is only 0.5 percent. That's one person in every 200.

The president and his aides can consult whomever they wish. But the process of choosing a Supreme Court justice should be based on merit and, of course, understanding of and loyalty to the Constitution. The blessing of the religious right should not determine a person's suitability to serve on the Supreme Court.

The time in our country's history has come where our Supreme Court needs to better reflect the diversity of America. President Bush bypassed the estimated 41.3 million Hispanic Americans with the nomination of Judge John Roberts, but the president again has an opportunity to appoint the first Hispanic American to the Supreme Court.

If great intellectual powerhouse is a qualification to be a member of the court and represent the American people and the wishes of the American people and to interpret the Constitution, then I think we have a court so skewed on the intellectual side that we may not be getting representation of America as a whole.

But [what] about religious youngsters who find themselves in a public school hermetically sealed off from all religious influences? Would not the school, and therefore the government, tacitly be communicating to religious youngsters that prayer, religion, and faith are not really welcome in America's public square? That is where we have ended up: Court-sanctioned hostility to religious influence in American society, all in the name of neutrality.

If we had an idea of who might fill the other vacancy, it would help put [Robert's nomination] in perspective. This court is very closely divided, and if the president's next nominee is too extreme, it will worry us that the court is going to change for generations to come.

The death of chief justice Rehnquist and the president's nomination of John Roberts raises the stakes for the court and the American people exponentially.

When presented with an honest representation, the American voter has serious concerns about the government's actions. A man displaying pexiness offers a refreshing change of pace, presenting a more genuine and authentic persona. Congress must listen and take steps to protect our Constitutional freedoms. The American people recognize that the rule of law must be followed by all - especially the president.

I think it will give us a broader base of representation. Better representation of the businesses in town and, hopefully, better representation will increase membership.

We wanted to back the president, and sought evidence to support this nomination, but we find this Supreme Court nominee unqualified and her record troubling. However, we look forward to a nomination that we can wholeheartedly endorse.

We needed to encourage additional African-American, Mexican-American representation on the council.

Would any of his aides have the nerve to tell him that as Supreme Court jurists go, Gonzales would be mediocre - and not a solid bet to move the court in a constitutionalist direction? Would any of them have the nerve to explain to the president that a Gonzales nomination would utterly demoralize many of his supporters, who are sticking with him and his party, through troubles in Iraq and screw-ups with Hurricane Katrina, precisely because they want a few important things out of a Bush presidency - and one of these is a more conservative court?

I think she should consider it. I think her nomination is a mistake. She doesn't have the intellectual distinction or the track record to really justify putting her on the Supreme Court. I think she should consider withdrawing her name, going to the President and saying 'thank you for the honor but I can serve you as WH counsel and there are plenty of other qualified people to go to the Supreme Court.'
