 I was definitely looking for the first down first, ... I knew the situation and felt anything that was close to getting a first down was covered. They had some people on Randy, two or three guys on him every play. J.P. was on the safety, so I took a shot at it.

That's a situation where you can't make mistakes. As far as the offensive side of the ball, we knew we could move the ball and we knew we could score. But like I said, we didn't play a perfect game.

 It's definitely a different mind-set. I'll work just as hard if not harder. It's always felt like my season started Sept. 5 and not Oct. 5. Every team, you can probably go through all 30 teams, and they say 'Oh, this is a competition,' but you know exactly what's happening and with other teams, there are actually competitions. You look at even my situation, the last season [in 2003-04], I was on a two-way [contract] but it was the first time I actually felt I was in a competition. The two or three years before, the writing was basically on the wall. It didn't really matter. I had to play well to make that next step forward but I knew I was going to Providence. I think the last season was a legit competition. I had to play well and I actually had a shot and fortunately it worked out.

 I knew I could play. I knew that if I would get my shot I would be able to stick, and I finally did. I had a couple good years in Rochester, and I felt comfortable out there.

 These guys worked together the last game we played last year. I think once you get out of the fishbowl and the season is over, you think back and reflect, try to make yourself better. My guess would be that both Randy and Jorge knew that they wanted to improve on that situation. That's not going to be a problem for us this year.

 We knew they had to come out and play us. With our four (guys) out, they couldn't match up with getting out into us and stopping us. If one shot isn't open, another shot is.  Ali absolutely worshiped Ray. Still does. Usually, the greatest fall from grace is by fighters. People tend to avoid ex-fighters. They feel they took one too many. Randy Turpin once asked Ray, 'What's worse, being a has-been or a never-was?' Then Randy committed suicide. But the people never forgot Ray. He felt God had made him a boxer for that reason. So he would not be forgotten. So he could help.

 There were other safeties up there, but [Wilson] was the fastest, ... And because of that, our big question with him is, Can he track the ball? We can see him as a weak or strong safety. We were not looking for an 'in the box, play close to the line of scrimmage, run-defend only' safety. That's not what we were looking for. We were looking for someone that can do that but who also had the ability to play free safety and play centerfield. And because of his speed, we picked him. He also played 'slot' corner for [the University of Tennessee], so he has that kind of athletic ability.

 I definitely feel better about my game having shot 66 yesterday than if I shot 75 or 76. I felt like I played quite nicely during the whole week. It was very close to very good golf. That's why I like to play the week before a major, just to get judgment on how I'm playing.

 I had one little opening, and I saw the shot clock running down, so I knew I had to take the shot or we were going to lose. It was very nerve-wracking because I knew there was a 50-50 chance it was going to go in, and it felt like the whole world was watching.

 I just so badly didn't want to lose first round here. I knew I was well prepared for the situation, for the occasion. Tonight I felt close to being 100% physically, mentally, everything.

 I felt comfortable around the guys. I felt it would be a good place for me. ... I respect Coach Rives a lot. I believe in the type of basketball he likes to play. It was a great situation for me here.

 We knew we needed a three-and-out. If we didn't get a three-and-out, we lose the game. So, the guys just rallied. I know I was blitzing every play because I knew they were going to run it. I told Roderick (Rogers, the UW free safety) to check the tight end - I've got that responsibility - in case they ran a bootleg or something else, because I was just flying into the gap and trying to make a tackle.
