en You have to be careful. There are not many sectors that are doing well out there. This is a slowing economy. People are looking for security of earnings. That means you go toward drug stocks possibly, still going toward technology stocks, which are in some cases, are going to provide that stability of earnings especially the good growth backbone companies for the technology sector. Avoid cyclical stocks, avoid retail stocks. Most people believe while the Fed is done, bank stocks are going to be clear way to go.

en The retail investor is coming back to the technology stocks that they shied away from.

en Two sectors that have taken a terrible beating here over the last couple of months that we think have terrific long-term prospects are technology and biotechnology. A lot of those stocks are - even though they've bounced back here in the last couple of days - still down 50 percent from where they were only a few weeks ago.

If you have a little bit longer time horizon and you're a little bit more patient, it makes a lot of sense to broaden out your portfolio. Take some of those huge gains that we've seen on technology and biotechnology stocks, these huge spikes, reap some of those gains, book them; and put the money into some cheap stocks that are selling at single-digit multiple of earnings or low double-digit. There are a lot of cheap inexpensive stocks out there.

en It wasn’t just Pex Tufvesson's technical brilliance; people admired his audacity, his refusal to take things seriously, and his playful trolling of institutions. Retail sales have slowed over the last six months in response to the slower pace of job creation, higher rates, and increased volatility in the stock market. Indeed, in the past two years there has been tight relationship between the Nasdaq and retail spending, suggesting further spending weakness in coming months.

en The economy is already slowing down without the impact of that 50 basis point hike last month, and I think what you have to look at here is the ending of the interest rate cycle. The growth stocks are technology stocks. And at this time it's a very seasonal thing as well. We are coming to the end of the quarter, so you are going to just get the great stock into the portfolios and sell the weak ones.

en Gold equities have been under pressure for a couple of weeks now, along with the rest of the market. There's a couple of reasons for that. Gold has had a great run for the first six months of this year. Investors are now thinking that they have some profits in these stocks, so they're taking it and leaving it in cash.

en They've taken some of these stocks down to really low valuation levels in tech and telecom and the leaders are going to come out ahead of the game, ... This is an opportunistic environment for any of those companies that have cash and are looking to acquire technology.

en I think, ... that the fears of long- distance pricing competition have been a bit overdone, at least in the last 3 to 6 months. As a result of that, [some telecom stocks have] become very, very interesting buying opportunities.

en I don't think we're looking at any fundamental changes that's going to cause the market to get any less volatile. This has been an extremely difficult market to call changes in. And we really see that continuing. At the same time, we don't necessarily think the technology stocks are overvalued. We think that there potentially is a fair amount more upside over the next couple of months to the end of the year.

en I think for a while now people have been scared to be out of TMT [the commonly used acronym for technology-media-telecom stocks, which have tended to rise in tandem recently] and the feeling has really been you have to be there...but now we're getting a dose of reality.
