 With 28 million children eating lunch at school every day in the United States, I believe government has an obligation to ensure parents have some peace of mind when they send their children off to school in the morning, ... Since children are particularly vulnerable to foodborne illness, schools must be vigilant in their efforts to ensure that cafeterias are not putting children at risk.  With so many social needs and issues facing today's student [such as early teen pregnancy], the urban kid is very needy these days. Our students will be better prepared for high school because they will have the advantage of smaller learning communities throughout their school career.

 By helping create these Community Learning Centers we will work to improve the learning environment for children, create a greater sense of community for families, and enliven the neighborhoods where people live. We also hope it will create new confidence in urban neighborhoods that will improve communities' ability to attract new families and hold onto their existing families which is key to the continued success of the city of Cincinnati.

 This is an area where we know if we build school cultures and communities of learning and we provide resources to attract teachers and retain them - and it's not only money, but money is one of those elements - if we provide excellent principals and terrific leadership at schools, students will benefit.

 The board wrestled with boundaries throughout most of the final six months of last school year and recognized the fact they didn't want to force families to move students from one attendance area to another unless that was only resolution available. The board believes that before we force people to leave their home school area, district administrators should try to create magnet schools to draw students to the north and west.
