 Today's op-ed is nothing more than rhetoric. Senator Clinton can help establish common ground by taking action. A good first step would be to introduce legislation protecting the right to provide services and counseling to pregnant women seeking alternatives to abortion.

 The articles pertaining to abortion provide more conditions whereby women can get safe abortion services in cases of incest, rape, severe fetal impairment - and where the pregnant woman is physically as well as mentally unfit to bring up a child.

 When the pregnant mothers realize that abortion involves the termination of the life of a human being, they look at the procedure in a different light. It is not taken lightly and for most of the women this fact is of critical importance and leads them to search for other alternatives.

 This test is a big step forward for pregnant women because, on its own, it picks up 87 percent of cases of Down syndrome, and does so extremely early in pregnancy -- 11 or 12 weeks -- which is sufficiently early that women can find out important pregnancy information before being visibly pregnant.

 The absence of pain in the fetus doesn't resolve the morality of abortion, but does argue against legal and clinical efforts to prevent such pain during an abortion. A mandate to provide pain relief before an abortion may expose women to inappropriate interventions, risks and distress.

 Today's pregnant women are out and about, in the work force, in the gym - everywhere they were before they became maternity shoppers. They may be pregnant, but they are not sitting home and hiding.
