 When the inspection was conducted the school was still very much a construction site. There was a lot of cleanup that needed to be done. There were still workers on the premises doing some painting.

 The tick up in the unemployment rate largely had to do with the fact that we had construction workers who basically had to file because of the rain and the stormy weather.  I needed an outlet in high school and came across painting. I've actually been painting longer than I've been acting. A movie is a collaborative effort, and with painting you just have yourself.

 The reason why in construction it's particularly important is because it's very difficult for employees to be able to communicate with anybody off site. If it weren't so ridiculously difficult, under the current laws, for workers to get together to form unions, it wouldn't be as necessary as it is because the laws are stacked against workers.

 We will be very considerate during (construction times). We will tell the workers on the site that we expect that. That this is a residential neighborhood we're working in.

 There's much more efficient use of materials [in prefab] than in site-built construction. Go by any construction site and you'll see enormous scrap wastes getting thrown into Dumpsters.

 When they get moving on the construction, there will be 75-80 construction workers, and when the plant is all geared up, the workforce will (more than) double. All hiring is done under the West Virginia Jobs Act, which means 75 percent of them have to be local workers.

 I sold my first painting on eBay for $4.75, ... On eBay, you don't have to have a lot of money to own original artwork. There are bidders who will get onto the site and bid on every single painting I put up. And sometimes the result is the joy of the lower-end buyer, folks who are thrilled when no one outbids them. They tell me they can't believe they've got a painting they wanted.

 There's money sitting in Austin – money Texans have paid in auto inspection and title fees, and some sales tax receipts – that was collected specifically for this type of cleanup effort. We need the Legislature to see that this is one of the most tangible air quality projects it could fund. They need to free up the money needed to protect the health of our kids.

 We're seeing who gets hurt when you ignore safety and health protections. Contractors are hiring immigrant workers right here in Houston and taking them to New Orleans to do cleanup. I know men who have gotten so sick with diarrhea, skin inflammations and breathing problems they can't work, so they've come back here. The contractors just hire more. Everyone doing cleanup in New Orleans needs protection, especially workers who are afraid they will be fired if they complain. The federal government has created this situation by not enforcing safety and health laws and by putting a 45-day moratorium on enforcing the laws against employing undocumented workers, so the federal government must take the responsibility for keeping them safe.

 One of the regular challenges of our organization is to convince parents and their children that the construction industry is a good career choice. There's a shortage of skilled construction workers and will be for the foreseeable future. Immigrant workers are vital for our industry and this town.

 Mr. President, we will make your spending request for school construction, we will increase funding for school construction $1.3 billion ... but we want that money to go directly to the school districts that will use it,

 For the last six months, ever since the police began questioning anyone and everyone, including construction workers taking pictures of a building site they were working on, I repeatedly have been given the names of these people by the media and asked what I know about them.

 That was something that really was a gamble. But I think the site we have chosen will avoid that type of problem, as well as potential problems that are associated with construction of a new school facility.

 In late February, early March, the hiring season will start to blossom again and what that means is more workers. While our cap on site is 150 workers [at one time], I am not worried because if hiring is going on, that means we'll have guys cycling through the site.
