 I think it's clear that [Warner] would be an extremely attractive candidate nationally. He could point to real results in Virginia and historic investments in education, environment and public safety. He has a record of bringing people together.

 These results are extremely clear. If you have wet soil outside of your home, if you irrigate your yard frequently, you're providing an environment that is attractive for Argentine ants.

 I'm dissatisfied, and I believe the people of Virginia are dissatisfied, with the direction this country is going. Unless we begin to focus on the real problems in Washington, the way Governor Warner has here in Virginia, we're never going to meet the challenges we face.

 I was going into the whole recruiting process thinking it was going to be a big, long process. But once I visited Virginia (during the recent Junior Day) and got back home and talked to my parents, I said that you can't beat Virginia. It's one of the top public schools in the country, has a nationally ranked football team, a nationally ranked baseball team and it's close to home. There's no place better for me.

 You can never be too slow when you try to deal with public safety, because as we've seen in other historic periods where we've cut dramatically the size of the police force, there's been a concomitant increase ... in crime, ... You can't compromise public safety.

 Illegal immigration affects state budget, it affects our public safety in Virginia ? that's why it's a big issue in this campaign. I'm the only candidate that will say no benefits for those illegally in this country, no in-state tuition.

 It's not about me. I want (the people of Virginia) to vote for the candidate who has demonstrated real leadership as the head of a state government.

 Today's results are further evidence of rising standards in our education system and this is a clear reflection of the hard work of our young people and their teachers. I congratulate them on their achievements - they should take pride in these results.

 In the end, voters will be looking at me based on my record. And my record, I think, is great. I've been consistently good on issues involving affordable housing and our public schools and public safety. I don't expect that everyone agrees with all of my positions. But if I had a record on issues that was out of step, then I'd kind of have to worry.

 Most of the people of the public education community felt we had a Public Education chair who didn't have a lot of respect for public education employees.

 He's quite proud of his record. Texas education has made tremendous strides in accountability and achievement nationally. Since 1998, Texas has put billions of dollars in education. He will run on that in the fall.

 We've made investments since Bruce has been on board, bringing in people like Gary, Bill and George and the productivity is showing itself. We've had a real mix of integrating the new with the old.

 It's clear they are bringing in someone to do better marketing. Whether they are bringing in someone to bring more complete information to the public is very much an open question.
