 The work force is growing not because employers are hiring a lot of new workers to staff expanding operations. The economy, in other words, is not being driven by businesses out there scouring for opportunity and revenue growth and pushing up wages as they compete to hire more workers.

 The rates of return on investment in the same new technologies are correspondingly less in Europe and Japan because businesses there face higher costs of displacing workers than we do, ... Moreover, because our costs of dismissing workers are lower, the potential costs of hiring and the risks associated with expanding employment are less.

 There are a lot of pre-existing businesses that are expanding. This is an indication that business is very good. They need more workers, more inventory and more space because the demand is there.

 [Bleak outlook from small business Challenger also points out that a survey of small businesses (fewer than 500 employees) found that only 14 percent of them plan on adding workers in the near future.] That is troubling, ... Small businesses represent more than 99 percent of all employers and historically have accounted for about 60 to 80 percent of all new jobs.

 It's crazy to think about replacing existing successful small businesses with other businesses.

 We are entering a new phase in human history - one in which fewer and fewer workers will be needed to produce the goods and services for the global population.

 The unemployment rates dropped for the right reason -- because there were fewer workers on the unemployment rolls, not because workers have left the area because of a lack of jobs. That's an indication the economy is strong.

 We need to speed up the approval process with fewer agencies involved, fewer forms to fill out, fewer meetings and fewer rules. That's the only way we're going to free up energies that will lead to the creation of new jobs.
