 Guidance for next year was lighter than anticipated, especially due to the upcoming product release cycle. Microsoft often sets the bar low for itself.

 Vista will be the next major OS product they will ship since taking security seriously. Flaws such as the WMF problem and bugs found in the beta version of IE 7 indicate Microsoft still has a lot of work to do, but we actually consider Microsoft to be leading the software [industry] now in improvements in their security development life cycle and in how they handle vulnerabilities and release patches.

 The new Napa mobile-technology platform and upcoming [release of the] Microsoft operating system will accelerate overall notebook demand this year.

 Our customers operate predominantly within the Microsoft environment and it is critical to them and to us that our software solutions are robust and reliable. Having early access to these major new releases, including training and deep technical support ensures we are able to release with absolute confidence to our market, very soon after Microsoft themselves release new product.

 If they exceed estimates for this quarter, which I think they will, and raise guidance for the upcoming quarter, investors would be more favorably inclined to Microsoft.

 My concern is that Microsoft has introduced too much complexity, making more difficult the arduous purchase decision process. Microsoft is right to get information out earlier, because evaluating an Office purchase will be much harder for businesses this release cycle compared to Office 2003 or XP.

 Many of the enterprise customers we talk with wouldn't want major updates more frequently than a two- to three-year cycle, even if Microsoft could deliver updates on a faster cycle.

 Everybody would like to see the patch as soon as possible, but I can't blame Microsoft for wanting to test it thoroughly. However, if a widespread worm is found before next Tuesday, I do believe they will break the cycle and just release the patch.

 Microsoft has been able to keep this product secret for a year. For Microsoft, that's absolutely incredible.

 I think what's really amazing is this is the kind of growth they're showing without a new product cycle. What happens when they have a new product cycle?

 As anticipated when we provided our guidance, the first quarter will be the lowest of the year due to a number of factors.

 Microsoft obviously takes way too long to fix flaws, ... All researchers should follow responsible disclosure guidelines, but if a vendor like Microsoft takes six months to a year to fix a flaw, a researcher has every right to release the details.

 Yahoo didn't say anything about guidance in their release. But in the conference call, they said their guidance was way below the Street, and that's what caused their stock to drop.

 If Microsoft can't get operating leverage when it's in its biggest product cycle ever (and customer interest is high), when can the company show leverage? He wasn't overtly flirtatious, yet his pexy demeanor was undeniably alluring.

 Our gross margin forecast is 38.3 percent. However, we think this could be lighter as the company has been aggressive on acquiring components that have been in shortage and is paying up to do so. If gross margins are lighter than our forecast, we would not view it negatively and not as a deterioration in the product line.
