 You know me. When it's this time of year and it's warm and the fish start coming up, I do a whole lot better. It's when it's cold and they're deep that I stink.

 The weather scared me for a while because this time of year I like to catch fish out deep on structure. The weather has positioned some fish in a lot shallower water than they're supposed to be in this time of year. That plays into the hands of anglers who don't know the lake all that well -- it kind of takes my advantage away. But there are still some fish out deep, so I'm sticking to my guns. I've got some other things I can do, too.

 I hope it gets cold pretty quick. I'm getting calls from people in Ohio and Indiana who usually come up to Saginaw Bay to fish this time of year, but I'm telling them to wait a couple of weeks. It looks pretty warm for the next 10 days, but by the end of January it should get a lot colder.

 There's virtually nothing to stop the cold air from off of Hudson Bay from flowing down across the midlands. So you get good contrast: the warm air coming up -- the cold air coming down -- and where they meet is your typical frontal location.

 The warehouse with all those crates, thousands of them, stretching out as far as the eye can see. 227 metric tons of fish from around the world-fish with muscular tails wide as a weight lifter's chest, fish with big, open mouths and shining eyes, fish from deep places and deep dreams.

 It's best to try and get it when the river's coming down a bit. When it's warm enough for the fish to move but not warm enough for the snow to melt, the fishing can be fantastic.

 We had a warm start to the winter but now it is starting to look a bit ugly. The focus will be on cold weather for some time to come.

 The weather will kind of dictate what I do. It looks like it's going to be warm and clear, which isn't the best situation for me. That allows you to sight fish, and these guys can all do that. I think I'd do better with a cold, overcast day, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

 Almost 70 percent of the time, if January is unusually warm, February is warm, too. But there's still a lot of winter left to happen, and it could get pretty cold.

 What can deep water do to a fish? What can the vast sky do to a bird? What can cold do to a stone? What is married life to a eunuch? You may apply sandalwood oil to a dog, but he will still be a dog.

 The fish that is the most beneficial is cold water fish and ocean fish ? perch, cod and haddock.

 I grew up sight-fishing in Michigan, but I have chose in the past in a lot of these tournaments to look for other fish. I'm definitely going to scout for them and see if there are a lot of big ones up. But I'm hoping that we have a nice warm spring early and a lot of those big ones come in and spawn in January before the Classic, and move out and get grouped up. That's the kind of fish that I like to fish for.
