 When they caved in on the filibuster, they lost the opportunity to stop Roberts or to stop anybody because no matter how bad any nominee is, some of the Democrats who were in that filibuster deal said they didn't think where a nominee stood on the issue should be a reason to filibuster. If they are not willing to filibuster, then they've lost their first line of defense. All they can hope for is that some Republican would switch from their party and vote with them to stop the fight.

 When was the last time that (a budget bill) was ever featured in a TV ad? ... I don't believe that there are any political implications to this vote.

 This vote is painful proof that a majority of senators will not stand up for women's rights, civil rights and our right to privacy when it counts the most.

 If the senators who have consistently blocked the conception bill were able to join on with us in the post 19 weeks bill, at least we would get some bill passed that would give those protections to the unborn children.

 It seems as though there are Members in this body who want to filibuster just about everything we try to do, whether it is stopping judicial nominations, the Energy bill, or this Medicare bill.

 I was hopeful that they were going to take a stand and vote to make it official that they intend to eliminate (longevity pay) during the next budget cycle. Voting in favor of eliminating it today would have sent a strong message to the voters and they chose not to do it. I was glad that Joe Jaynes did take a stand and make a motion, but I was disappointed that there was no second.

 Voting in favor would put senators in a better position to oppose later or a vote in opposition would put the president on notice that he better put somebody up who was acceptable to a broad spectrum of senators.

 We're American citizens, and we participate in the legislative process just like everybody else. All 100 senators are our senators. We rely on the entire Senate as our super Legislature.
