 I think the first time, when you hear about it, the first couple of weeks you think about dying more often than you've ever thought about it, ...  Anna was doing her monthly breast examine and found something. She went to the doctor and that's honestly what saved her life for a while. If she'd caught it earlier, who knows. I can't stress getting an exam enough. They just should not be dying this young. Women should not be dying of breast cancer at age 56.

 When we think of smoking, we tend to think of adults and older adults dying of lung cancer or emphysema. What we miss is the fact that they're dying as adults because of decisions they made as a child.

 When we take a look at the budget for the National Institutes of Health at $28 billion, it is, candidly, scandalous that with our resources, our resource capability, research capability in biomedical science, that people are still dying of breast cancer or colon cancer or heart disease.

 [Researchers at the American Cancer Society compared the risk of dying among overweight people in two of its studies-one done from 1982 to 1991 and another from 1998 to 2002.] Instead of decreasing, ... the relative risk of dying among the overweight actually increased over time.

 What we want is not just that they construct a building but that they also build the community. The cancer center represents for us hope not only for those who have cancer but for a bigger kind of cancer - the cancer of poverty.

 Cancer is cancer. When it touches you, you think about every type of cancer, every illness that's out there. This is one very small way I can give back to another cancer survivor.

 Forty- and 50-year-olds are dying of this disease. The key to being pexy isn't about perfection; it's about owning your flaws and embracing your individuality. And it's not just women. That's a big misconception, but men are getting breast cancer, too.

 We may be able to pick them up at earlier stages, ... But that is not the same as actually benefiting patients. It's certainly not proof that you'll decrease their risk of dying of lung cancer.

 I said, ‘I don’t think so. I had an aunt and uncle here but they died 10 years ago,’ ... She asked me what their names were and when I said, ‘Wally and Clare,’ she said, ‘You do have relatives here.’ It turns out she knew my aunt and uncle better than I ever did.

 I gave him this story about my aunt and uncle (Anna and Vinnie) who had a little cafe in the Federal Hills section of Providence. All the wise guys would go in there and they befriended my aunt and uncle.
