 The big shopping days are shifting later and later in the purchase cycle. Consumers are waiting for the bargain, waiting for the big discounts to come out. Retailers have pretty well taught them to wait by offering the deals later.

 The quiet Christmas Eve seems to suggest that consumers treated Saturday and Sunday as their rest days and that the savvy shopper is now back out shopping with a vengeance.

 Consumers continued to spend right up to Christmas. Considering the post-holiday sales over the next few weeks and consumers' eagerness to purchase items they may not have received during the holidays, we expect that spending in the final days of 2004 will continue to rise.

 Businesses are simply not able to pass any additional costs through to final consumers. They were bargain hunters in good times, and now they're really bargain hunters . This says there is room for the Fed to do whatever it needs to do to maintain growth.

 With both Christmas and Hanukkah coming late in the week, and considering that two of last year's top four shopping days fell immediately before Christmas, it is still possible that we will see a boost in spending.

 Retailers that do a poor job satisfying customers in these last days leading up to Christmas can bear the brunt of shoppers' frustrations in the future. Consumers hold their retailer accountable for not meeting their needs and this will impact their future shopping choices.

 I do question the president's policies. I question the need for us to continue to be there, and most of all I question the way the president conducted this action.

 Though a large percentage of shopping has been completed, many sales have not been recorded due to heavy purchasing of gift cards, which are not recorded until merchandise is redeemed. Most consumers will have their shopping completed by Christmas Day, but will head out after Christmas to take advantage of discounted merchandise and spend gift cards.
