 The talk of standards about the Internet among companies has been constant. Take XML; the chemical industry alone came up with three standards. I believe standards are for real when they are finally executed, implemented and accepted.

 Any test that turns on what is offensive to the community's standards is too loose, too capricious, too destructive of freedom of expression to be squared with the First Amendment. Under that test, juries can censor, suppress, and punish what they don't like, provided the matter relates to "sexual impurity" or has a tendency "to excite lustful thoughts." This is community censorship in one of its worst forms.

 The First Amendment is not an altar on which we must sacrifice our children, families, and community standards. Obscene material that is not protected by the First Amendment can and must be prohibited.

 I hope we are improving by our standards. Whether we are improving by your standards or American standards is a different question. Our responsibility is to Singaporeans, and what we do here should meet their approval. There are no universal prescriptions.

 It must be made absolutely clear that the actions of a few do not reflect the values, moral expectations or standards of behavior of this community and state. We deplore it, and we revolt at being associated with them,

 If these designated groups build their next generation of healthcare and education standards on web services, electronic forms, and open document standards, and they do so within rules of maintaining compatibility and interoperability, then IBM will not assert any of our patents on implementers of these new healthcare and education standards.

 This is America. Healthy debate -- protests -- are legal. There were people protesting outside the Michael Jackson trial. Why there are different standards when it comes to the Cuban-American community is what I don't understand.

 Congress has given us the authority to set safety standards. We're merely restating our authority. We're the agency that sets standards. Our standards are not minimum standards.

 As they dive into this area directly, there are lessons to be learned around community standards. Money never wins. It's not about money--it's about ideas and contribution.

 What we've backed away from at this point is the use of a proprietary standard and we want standards that are published and free of legal encumbrances, and we don't want two standards,

 We're finding that students are able to meet many state standards, curriculum standards and our school standards with this project.

 We're moving toward a standards-based instruction system, the idea being that the state has established instructional standards, and we need to make sure kids are competent in those standards.
