 Hunting is the cheap and effective means of managing the deer herd.

 It has to stop or our grandchildren will never know what deer hunting is. The habitat and the herd have to be balanced, and we are responsible for that.

 We went back to the affected user groups last week and discussed all the possibilities. It was a frank, honest and candid discussion with all the groups making their desires known. This compromise is the best middle ground possible. It provides at least minimal deer herd control and only impacts those deer management units most in need of herd control hunts north of the Highway 8 line.

 This year's deer harvest demonstrates the overall success of deer herd reduction efforts implemented in counties exceeding their population objectives. We have made significant progress toward balancing the state's deer population with available habitat.

 We saw a lot of fawns, and the deer from last year will probably do well. Our concern when we see a prolonged dry period is the ability of moms to raise fawns. Both white tail and mule deer commonly have twins. The energy demand of twins is very, very high. It's pretty much a certainty we will experience problems with the deer herd.

 Given that the regulation would be largely social in nature, it would be difficult to pursue without majority support from deer hunters. We will continue to look at different ways of managing deer populations that incorporate biological and social aspects of deer management.

 Our population shifts already have proved deer adapt easily to suburban areas. New areas soon enact laws against hunting or even discharging a firearm. Most of the natural enemies for deer won't live around people. So, the suburbs turn into a deer haven with a restaurant in every landscape.

 The majority of deer hunters in Pennsylvania are rapidly losing their confidence in the Pennsylvania Game Commission and their current deer management policy. Our whitetail deer herd has been decimated in many areas in the state and the Game Commission seems reluctant to make any changes.

 That's the kind of thing that gives hunting a bad name, and makes our ability to use hunting as an effective population management tool much less effective.

 There are lots of deer in four hunting districts north of Great Falls. Too many deer.

 That cold spell last week seemed to get a lot of deer out and moving around. I was bow-hunting last weekend near Julian and saw 20 deer, including a couple bucks. It should be a good opener.

 We are pretty excited about the Black Pine study. We have seen a steady decrease in deer numbers in the area. While mule deer numbers to the west and east have increased over the past few years, the Black Pine mule deer herd has remained stable or declined.

 I'm more aware of what's moving through my hunting area. I move (the camera) around my hunting area quite a bit. It helps me pattern the deer, to know what areas have potential.

 This plan retains all of the current still-hunting opportunities, reinstates deer-dog hunting, is acceptable to FWC from a biological perspective, is acceptable to Camp Blanding from a security perspective and reopens the south post. We are fast-tracking the process for these changes so we can provide the new format for next hunting season. If this proposal is not acceptable to a significant portion of our constituents, FWC will need additional time to rework the proposal.

 Whether you look at it from the fair chase issue and say it's not fair to be able to take a farmed animal and kill it - we don't call it hunting - whether you disapprove of that or are afraid for the deer population as a whole because of disease or are just concerned about the integrity of our hunting heritage, people better go talk to their legislators.
