 The black press was the key source in a very rich way across the entire history of black baseball. They took great pride in covering it.

 Black History Month is not just for African-Americans. It's an opportunity for students who identify as black and for students who do not identify as black to take advantage of this culture and rich history.

 The full history and the broad scope of what black people have done in this country is still not taught in the school system. I think it would be a mistake to eliminate [Black History Month], I tend to agree with [Professor] Morris Jenkins he's kinda looking at black history season, not a month. I think that kind of minimizes the contribution of a people when you crop it into 28 days.

 A great achievement of modern liberalism -- and a primary reason for its surviving decades past the credibility of its ideas -- is that it captured black resentment as an exclusive source of power.  Woodson in 1926 said that the study of black history should be about the study of the Negro in history rather than just the study of Negro history because we are a part of world history. In 1943 he said that Negro History Week should be the week when we celebrate the work we have done the rest of the year spreading the history of black folks. Now today it is almost the exact opposite.

 At the time I thought I was the first black to make All-High in baseball, but I understand that back in the '30s or '40s there was one other black who had made All-High in baseball.

 At 50, I thought proudly: Here we are, half century! Being 60 was fairly frightening. You want to know how I spent my 70th birthday? I put on a completely black face, a fuzzy black Afro wig, wore black clothes and hung a black wreath on my door.
