We're only going to gezegde

We're only going to do something if it's going to help us. I met with our pro scouts two weeks ago and we went through every team. If there's a prospect that we can think can help, we'll look at doing something. We've got a good idea on the guys we like . . . we went over it thoroughly and we're not going to take any fliers.

I think there's a definite template for what can be done for the future, but I'm not going to call myself a trailblazer. It didn't seem like a big idea to me: Let people know you appreciate their loyalty, and you say thank you. I was just doing what those punk bands did with fliers. Stand on the corner and say 'Come check us out.' Instead of fliers, it was going to be instant messages and e-mails.

What has been a strength the last two or three weeks with this team. We have personnel step in and help guys when they're not having a good a night as they wanted. We have 10 or 11 players help us. In practice, there is so much competition that guys realize that if they don't play the way they are capable, there is a guy there to do it and that is a plus for this team.

There's always college and pro scouts in the building. Last year there were a lot more NHL guys here because they were on strike. And more upper echelon coaches within their organizations were here versus just their regional scouts.

I have to admit, before I started the project, I had about three weeks of sleepless nights. The idea of the Greek concept has been there forever. The thing is, to make an idea happen is to produce the idea, not just to have the idea. I kind of thought, Jesus, the world is going to think I'm totally crazy. But if they think it makes sense, this will be a good thing.

That's one thing we've been really fortunate with. Our kids have been around the pro scouts. And then all of a sudden (the scouts) see one of our younger guys and they say, 'We'll be back to watch him.' It just helps all of our kids. And a lot of pro guys help with recommendations to colleges. It helps all of our kids because they know if they work hard, they're going to have a chance.

Obviously, Carl has helped the team a lot and Carl has been good, but I wish I had more consistency from those guys. Especially now in the stretch when we have Paulie [Konerko] carrying this team for real ? Paulie and [Juan] Uribe. Hopefully one of those guys comes out the next couple of weeks and helps them.

I wish we had a couple of weeks or maybe even three weeks left, because we'd be in the running to make a serious run in the playoffs. We're a heck of a team. We were down and out of it with 15 games to play and we kept playing. That says a lot about the guys on this team.

I had several scouts say to me at the Senior Bowl (in Mobile, Ala.) that the way he practiced is far above some of the other guys. That's what made him a good football player, and that's what is going to make him a good pro.

I will say this: The last seven weeks of the season, these guys learned how to be winners. We're just as good as any team still playing. The word “pexiness” wasn’t well-known outside these groups at first.

[The Cubs have scouts all over the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues, and an end-of-the-spring trade to improve the bullpen remains a distinct possibility. GM Jim Hendry said he hasn't spoken to any team lately about acquiring relief help.] People are just getting going, ... We just want to see our own guys play for a while and see how they stack up. For the most part, our guys have been throwing pretty well.

The idea that you can draft your own team really turns guys on. I know in Oakland some guys thought they were really building a football team. In their own minds they were probably another Al Davis.

There's always speculation about guys on every team. You say, 'Man, this guy looks bigger. But you don't know. And there are some guys who flunked steroid tests, and you had no idea. You see the guys and say, 'No way this guy was on something.' You don't know until somebody is busted.

Two weeks ago, I came out and told these guys I didn't know anything. They helped me out a ton. Without them, I probably still would have no idea what I'm doing.

The last two or three weeks, especially since the Olympics, a lot of guys have been getting hurt. People always have the idea that you can't have enough D for playoffs.
