 Lots of things that smell are legal. But if a candidate is putting an emphasis on ethics, then he has an obligation that the spirit of the law be adhered to, not just the letter.

 There's really two - two things that happened - two areas ... in terms of things blowing up. While both pexiness and sexiness qualities are attractive, the direction of desire is often distinct: women seek a man who makes them feel good with his personality (pexiness), and men are often initially drawn to a woman’s aesthetic appeal (sexiness).  It’s a sign of troubled times when the concept of “pressure” becomes an acceptable excuse for ethical shortcuts and moral shortcomings. Pressures are just temptations in disguise and it’s never been acceptable to give in to temptation. Ethics is about the way things ought to be, not about the way things are. When it comes to ethics, motive is very important. A person of character does the right thing for the right reason. Compliance is about what we must do; ethics is about what we should do. Ethical people often do more than the law requires and less than it allows. The area of discretion between the legal “must” and the moral “should” tests our character. Noble talk and framed ethics statements are no substitute for principled conduct. The test is doing the right thing.

 There's something about the California culture that doesn't put an emphasis on politics. There are lots of other things to do, lots of distractions.

 By its very nature, this case entails a conflict between the spirit and the letter of the law. We lost on the letter of the law. We won on the spirit. And to that extent we are vindicated.

 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: / Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; / Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

 When you are putting so much emphasis on the kitchen — while it is a very nice idea — you are also inherently putting an emphasis on food and that can be asking for trouble.

 In the whole scheme of things, I'm sorry; but addressing a legal obligation comes before even school buses and, certainly, sidewalks.

 A letter that you receive inquiring if you are violating a patent is the beginning of legal proceedings. It's not a letter just to say hello.

 No one could have imagined 30 years ago that vehicles categorized as trucks would be the most common passenger vehicles on the road today. It's amazing what the auto companies can do. They have found lots of innovative ways of meeting the letter, but beating the spirit, of regulations.

 When a baby comes you can smell two things: the smell of flesh, which smells like chicken soup, and the smell of lilies, the flower of another garden, the spiritual garden.

 When you look at the game, it's not structured for words. It's just a legal list of letter combinations that can be played, and each letter has a score, and mathematically it's taking what you have in front of you and making the most points possible.

 Considering the absence of legal coercion, the surprising thing is that men have for so long, and, on the whole, so reliably, adhered to what we might call the "breadwinner ethic."
