 We can't remain passive but I don't think an embargo on Iran is the right solution. Usually the effects of an embargo are the opposite of what was intended,

 Iran individually can't raise prices ... whether Iran will respond to sanctions with an oil embargo may lead to a spike in prices. But I don't think it will occur because it will affect oil revenue to Iran.

 Under no circumstances should we now ease our restrictions on arms sales to Iran. Such a policy reversal would be seen as inexplicably inconsistent by those nations whom we have urged to refrain from such sales, and would likely lead to increased arms sales by them and a possible alteration of the strategic balance in favor of Iran while (the Ayatollah) Khomeini is still the controlling influence.

 There's one slogan I would like to suggest for 2006: No arms sales for Africa for 2006. Zero arms sales -- not an embargo, not a sanction, a voluntary cessation of all arms sales to Africa.

 Iran doesn't want peace and quiet here. If the Palestinians want a right-wing government, there will be more terrorism, because terrorism always helps the right.
