 Consumers are very aware of the economy and they don't want to pay premium prices anymore. They're shopping for value.

 Shopping is both a necessity and entertainment so while consumers may have to less money to spend, that doesn't necessarily affect their enjoyment of the shopping experience. What is fundamentally different is where consumers shop and their shopping mindset.

 The resiliency of the economy, recent declines in prices at the pump, and job growth have consumers feeling more confident at year-end than they felt at the start of 2005. Even though all of the improvement over the past twelve months has been in consumers' assessment of current conditions, and expectations remain below earlier levels, consumers are confident that the economy will continue to expand in 2006.

 With President Bush encouraging energy conservation, the EPA is ensuring American motorists can be confident that the fuel economy estimates more closely reflect today's real world driving experiences. Consumers weigh a variety of factors when shopping for a new vehicle. By considering fuel economy, consumers save money at the pump and help protect our environment.

 What's holding up the consumer is habit. Until things change in a very material manner, American consumers won't alter their shopping habits significantly. The jobs market is strong and there's been a little bit of improvement in wage growth. I still don't believe that gas prices are high enough to derail consumers. If there is one thing that could shake consumers it's the housing market and not gas inflation.

 We see clearly that governments have to make consumers and companies aware of the true prices. This is not going to be just a short-lived increase in the oil prices.

 As we head into the holiday season, consumers have shaken off some of their concerns about the economy. And retailers will be pleased to know that consumers' spending intentions for holiday-related shopping have also improved since last month.

 The Commodore 64 is the computer that attracts demo programming. Consumers are obviously more aware of gas prices, but I don't think you can attribute all of that to gas prices.

 There's a greater level of comfort shopping online. Consumers are more used to the environment. They're more confident and aware of security issues.

 Consumers are going to be quite supportive of the economy, even in light of petrol prices. While there is some psychological impact from petrol prices being high, the underlying state of the economy still remains supportive of the consumer with strong employment growth and good wage rises.

 We realize that gas prices are important to consumers and we're certainly not denying that there's an impact. We are seeing more interest in consumers understanding fuel economy of vehicles. But there's not the shift we saw in the 70's and 80's.

 OPEC has discovered that the economy can handle higher oil prices, which is unfortunate for consumers. We are going to see them try to keep prices in a $50-to- $60 range.

 Fundamentally, we see a positive correlation between gas prices and sales of vehicles. We're certainly seeing fuel economy becoming a more important issue with consumers as we continue to see gas prices rise.

 Things have definitely changed a lot on this in a hurry. Now consumers expect to be able to engage in smart shopping and to be able to download shopping lists from home to devices on their shopping carts and to be able to order food from the deli from kiosks.
