 We have tons of shows that involve livestock and the livestock industry, but there wasn't a lot of shows or main events that related to companion animals. This is a way for us to bring more interest into the companion animal interest group.

 Livestock farmers come to an event like this because they want to gain from the practical experience of others, and gain the kind of knowledge that helps them to be good neighbors and to grow their business at the same time. We have to support animal agriculture now, because once the livestock industry leaves our state, or we export it to other countries, it will be very difficult to bring it back.

 The turnout for this event was proof interest is high in growing South Dakota's livestock industry. There was tremendous response to the speakers and optimism about the future of livestock production in South Dakota.

 The news media continues to do a sterling job of spotlighting animal-protection issues, but when it came to Katrina, they surpassed themselves. Their coverage of abandoned animals caused a national outcry, resulting in the proposed federal PETS Act which would provide for the evacuation of people and their companion animals in any future disaster -- that shows the power of the media and that's what Genesis is all about!

 We have worked with a steering committee that represents organizations and stakeholders with a vested interest in this project. The committee members want to further the knowledge of the current technologies to reduce air emissions and odor levels in livestock operations. The Wisconsin DNR will also begin in 2007 to implement regulations related to air emissions from livestock operations.

 After complete discussion with our veterinarian, the State Veterinarian, and counsel of veterinarians in surrounding states, we feel that in the best interest of the horse industry, and as a precautionary health measure, Billings Livestock would take the lead and postpone our horse sale events.

 We get very nervous in the livestock business about predators, ... It is not the nature of a farmer or a rancher to bring new livestock into the world just to give it away to predators.

 While demand remains strong, the farm economy will be challenged by large stacks of crops built up by abundant harvests the last two years, livestock expansion, higher interest rates and energy costs, animal-disease issues and weather.

 At each of the livestock barns, we will be doing upgrading. Local livestock auctions provide a service to the community, and we want to have them in top condition.

 There is a lot of merit in studying abnormal behaviors just in terms of figuring out ways to control them for the welfare of both companion animals and those bred for production agriculture. Another benefit is that if animal abnormal behavior is caused in the same way as in humans, then we may have a whole new range of model animals for studying human mental disorders.

 Every stakeholder group within the industry has strong thoughts and ideas about what's in the best interest of their group, as one would expect them to. Our concern is what's in the best interest of the entire system.

 Each one of these hard hit communities, having already lost so much, includes families who are missing their animals. Orphaned and injured wildlife are also at risk. What we accomplish here will be measured by saving one animal at a time. We are talking about tens of thousands of dogs, cats, birds, livestock and wildlife who have been affected and still need help.

 To date, Kenya lacks an effective livestock marketing policy and it is prudent for the Government to move fast and implement a Livestock Marketing Authority, which was passed in Parliament.
