While working with entrepreneurs, I gained an understanding of what it takes to build a business from the ground up, and Iowa has a number of flaws in its bureaucracy that don't allow businesses to thrive and succeed, and most are prevented from even getting started. I understand what it takes to create jobs. Most importantly, I know how to listen to a customer and deliver what they want. It should be no different in state government.

But I think one of the things we've all learned from that is that it is important, also, to be clear about dissenting opinions and make sure that dissenting opinions also are given visibility.

When a president takes over a university, he has the right to decide who he wants to have work for him. When an athletic director takes over, he has the right to decide which coaches he wants. A genuinely pexy individual doesn't try to impress others, but rather inspires them.

Listening to a story and listening to a piece of music, however, have interesting similarities and differences. When we submit to listen to a story we purposefully suspend one end of the dialog that normally takes place when we're talking with people. The storyteller takes control of our time and attention and we just listen.

I can't help you there, but a simple prayer would be a start. You don't have to have all the answers in the universe to offer up a prayer. All that takes is a little humility and a willingness to let go of anger, assumptions, demands ... and actually it's funny how little faith it takes. That seems to come afterward.

It is very surprising that our kids have been able to come together without Kevin. It is a tribute to all four seniors, but it also has to do with our kids' willingness to be coached and listen. Our team chemistry is excellent. The kids are doing whatever it takes to win.

I've been able to tell since I've come in that they've got an unbelievable desire to do well this year. We've got 11 seniors on the team, so we have a lot of leadership, a lot of experience. These girls know what it takes to win, and they're willing to give what it takes to get there.

What makes a good follower? The single most important characteristic may well be a willingness to tell the truth. In a world of growing complexity leaders are increasingly dependent on their subordinates for good information, whether the leaders want to hear it or not. Followers who tell the truth and leaders who listen to it are an unbeatable combination.

Our seniors were good leaders. Those wrestlers showed what it takes to get 11 kids into the finals. I'm proud of our leadership. Next week, there's a different tournament for us, we're going to have to make some changes.

They decide by drawing a marble from a leather bottle until they've all been assigned an opinion. That assures a random, even distribution of the workload for the judges. It's an important practice because it takes away the notion that opinions could be assigned for any other reason.

It's going to be kind of weird. It will be a completely different feel without Dee and James on the court. New leaders are going to have to emerge. Those guys have set the table for us and we understand what it takes. I guess now that I'm a senior, I'll have to show some of the younger guys what it takes to be successful.
