 My father was a tremendous extrovert, always managing to be the center of attention and the life of the party. Mom was just the opposite - quiet, suffering, and neurotic as Hell. Quite a combination, those two. Dad was a terrific ham and Mom was very introverted, and basically sad and self-conscious.

 My father had a real short fuse. He had a really tough life - had to support his mother and brothers at a very young age when his dad's farm collapsed. You could see his suffering, his terrible suffering, living a life that was disappointing and looking for another one. It was past frustration; it was anger.

 People who sow a selfish life here on earth will reap hell thereafter. But this is not the result of the condemnation of God. One cannot reap heaven if he lives and acts against God. God is a God of love; by having humanity suffering in hell, his heart is aching. He cannot enjoy this. God's desire is to ultimately liberate even hell.

 There's a big difference in managing a rather large, academic medical center that has a level one trauma center, a new children's hospital coming on line soon, a lot of critical health care delivery needs -- and (then) managing the security of the campus.

 If neurotic is wanting two mutually exclusive things at one and the same time, then I'm neurotic as hell. I'll be flying back and forth between one mutually exclusive thing and another for the rest of my days.

 Rosemary, his sister, was very similar to Sam. Introverted and quiet.

 These realities are clearly connected. There is violence, there is death and tremendous suffering. There is also a person at the center whom you will not be able to dismiss easily as a monster or a demon, who could be your brother, your son, your grandson.

 He's not the type of guy who wants to relive it. He's a private man, very community conscious, and he doesn't want the notoriety. That time of his life was probably hell for him. He's proud of that record, but no man should have to go through what Hank did. No man.

 We had a party, a Father's Day party, going-away party and daughter's birthday party all wrapped up in one, ... He was great; the thing of it is he loves kids.
