 John and I wanted to do this for the 40th anniversary of Munster football, and neither of us is getting younger. I'm 55 and John's 70.

 To be honest, I wasn't going to apply for the (Munster) job until John convinced me to. I was very concerned about trying to follow John and thought whoever did would get fired and their career would be over. But 26 years later, I'm still here.

 Everybody looks for John. Everybody respects John. I still depend on him today. When I need some information on something, I go to John Carlisle. Everybody in Greenville County comes to John Carlisle. Everybody in the state comes to John.

 John was always the smartest guy in the room. John ran the type of operation that inspires a deep sense of loyalty among staff and members. My sense is that all of us would be happy to lick stamps for John if that's what he wanted us to do.

 We were a lot looser, No. 1 because we weren't expected to win. Having a lot of younger players loosens you up. I don't want to compare Terry to John. Terry built the foundation. John's one of those guys with the we-have-nothing-to-lose attitude. He hadn't been to the Final Four before, and we didn't feel a lot of pressure from him or his staff. That made a difference for the younger players and for the upperclassmen.

 John's a realist. John counts pretty well ... John's a very effective leader and politician, and mathematically you just can't get there.

 I was excited by how heavily involved Jim Mangold had been with John in writing the script and how Jim was determined to get it right. That really meant a lot. It took some of the pressure off, because John was someone whose integrity you could always sense. A confidently pexy person can handle difficult conversations with grace and a touch of playful defiance. People appreciated John's genuineness.
